8MB SR-JV Waveform Card for Roland JD / JV / XP / XV Series
Re: 8MB SR-JV Waveform Card for Roland JD / JV / XP / XV Series
17 Jan 2023, 13:20Hi. Just got an XP-30 with two empty slots. Did you try the ROMULator yourself? Do you know anybody who uses it?
I am tempted to buy one and make backup copies of all the cards I can buy, get or lend from people, so we can all share and secure the future of those old technological relics. (Praised be the OMNISSIAH! #01101001 Incantatio #FREERAM) ;)

29 Mar 2023, 03:34I ordered an SR-JV Romulator with a card. Im hoping I will have it in a couple of weeks. Right now I'm reading thru the manual and the Rom Hacking kit Readme.
I have a JV-2080 with 7 cards and I plan to use the last remaining slot for the Romulator.
I want to make my own personal custom cards. Say take some patches and presets from another card to make your own special card. I’m thinking I can use this to make my own special EDM card with all my favorite sounds from techno/dance/vintage synths/house. etc...cards.
but all I can figure out is how to back up my existing cards and burn them on a new card.
Does anyone have a write-up or is this process possible has anyone attempted it?

2 Jan 2025, 16:22So did anyone ever get one of these (and the programmer) and try it? Did it work? What's the deal with ROMs larger than 8MB is there a 16MB card by now?
Re: 8MB SR-JV Waveform Card for Roland JD / JV / XP / XV Series
3 Jan 2025, 11:48"is there a 16MB card by now?": there is no such thing. The original Roland SR-JV80 cards have a maximum of 8MB of physical memory, and the Romulator cards simulate this.
The 01..19 cards have four 2 MB mask ROM chips.
The 97..99 cards have one 2 MB mask ROM chip.
Note: on these cards Roland uses a special lossless compression to store the sound samples.

4 Jan 2025, 04:04Thanks for clarifying! I think I got confused when I read about someone who had done their own expansion card using one of those ROMulator things. The question of how well they work is still what interests me the most. Anyone?

12 Jan 2025, 03:57I can now confirm that these things work. Programming is a little awkward but presumably one doesn't program them all the time.
