Fantom-S and Fantom-X

S88 or X8?

I'm considering purchasing an 88-note board and want to be able to add the SRX-12 classic keys expansion and 128mb Fantom-format sampled piano (which I presently have in an XR). I'm wondering if the S88 will load multisamples like the X8, and if there are any other significant differences apart from the extra ROM bank, audio expansion, and colour display of the X8. I'm thinking a secondhand S88 may well do it for me for live if it can handle my piano sample.
Thanks.

Well, if you're planning your new unit to be rather long lasting, I'd suggest getting a second hand X8 then. Twice the polyphony means a lot, new grand piano, as well as drums and other sounds do make a big difference. However, if you will have the XR alongside, S88 will surely do fine if the price difference is too high.

If you can swing the money, get the X. Twice the polyphony is always nice, and the SRX-12 really shines in the X series, giving control features not available on Roland's other SRX compatible gear.

If you want to take full advantage of SRX 12, you should really get the Fantom X. If the money isn't an issue, the Fantom X8 purchase over the S88 is a no brainer.

don't think about the money, few gigs and you get it back.
