Integra 7

Windows 7 + soundcard + usb integra audio + asio4all anyone?

Windows 7 + soundcard + usb integra audio + asio4all anyone?

8 Feb 2015, 17:47
Hi guys,

I'm considering installing the driver for USB Audio in my windows 7 machine, this way i could get 2 different inputs in my daw (Cubase) and luckily use asio4all for both my soundcard (Xonar DX) and the Integra7 at the same time.

Anyone doing anything similar already?

Cheers

Sergi

Asio4all for lower latency than the Integra-7 itself yes it works well, but if you stack soundcards in there latency piles up as well and it's not very practical. Here I can get to play via the Integra-7 as low as 1.1ms latency @96kHz with Asio4All whereas it's much higher with the Integra-7 Asio driver itself. Also if you do so don't ignore midi latency : playing midi through the Integra-7 MIDI through might be significantly faster than through your previous PCI midi interface.

But you should get rid of your Asus Xonar card, seriously, it's old and it's never been designed for audio production in the first place, gaming mostly, and the Integra-7 sound interface is probably not very different from the Roland Capture series, which is quite good already : the Integra-7 as a sound interface is probably superior to the Xonar thing by a far amount.

Thanks lol!

About getting rid of the Xonar, well i know it's not very professional for audio duties but it does the job

If i get it then, i will be able to use both inputs (the Xonar line-in and the integra USB Audio) together AT THE SAME TIME within Asio4all?

Also i have another question, I have an old printer USB cable that seems what i need to connect the integra via usb to my pc, the cable dates from 2005-2006. In the manual of the integra it says the cable should support USB 2.0 High Speed, is there any chance that that cable won't work as expected?

I think the integra-7 's usb audio quality are better than other options.

I'm not questioning that, if anyone knows the answer to my questions I will be grateful if he/she lets me know!

If no one knows the answer to your question try it yourself.

Still interested if someone could tell me if it would work before trying anything myself.

Hey sorry I don't have the time for that right now, but I think it works, although as I said already, it's not something you would want practically because the audio interfaces latencies pile up and you loose all the benefit of it. Also you should look for the chinese modded beta of Asio4all that is much better than the original concerning latency and drop outs.

Anything else?
Have fun

Thanks lol, i really appreciate your help!

Do the latencies really "Pile up" or it's just that the biggest device latency is used for all of the devices instead?

How about the cable? if it plugs, it works?

USB 2.0 High Speed became the industry standard around 2003, so your cable should be compatible.

A bigger concern is the age of the cable, especially considering that USB cables tend to be cheap in both price and quality.

If it looks good, I would use it. But I always want to have a spare cable available, if it is needed.

Just in case someone wonders, i succesfully connected the integra7 via usb to my win7 machine, and it works together with the Xonar fine. On the bad side, it seems that I need to use 3 kernel buffers on Asio4all to make the integra audio not sound glitchy, the default is 2 kernel buffers. I used to have a 10ms in and 10ms out latencies when using the Xonar alone, now i get 10ms in and 19ms out, not a big deal for me really, but needs to be mentioned. Only god knows what my real latencies are as I guess Cubase just does an estimation, but it doesn't sound bad.

Man 10 ms is a lot of latency, it's the far out limit for live monitoring of a guitar for instance, and 19ms is just enormously bogus, how do you only manage to work like that? The Integra-7 asio driver itself is able to get you down to 3ms, and if you use the asio4all at all it's in hope you can shave another couple of ms, or what is the point in all that, really?

I work on a daily basis drums and piano with the Integra-7, there's no latency so to speak, other than the keyboard and edrum kit. But when I play vstis in win7 on a fairly old intel quad machine, I want the same instant sound, and for that the Integra-7 midi thru to the asio4all chinese mod sets me up with 1.6ms latency (it reads 1.6ms in AND out, so that should be 3.2ms for the monitoring loop) @96kHz with no glitch or dropout at all. Even if I add as a daughter to the asio4all the pci audio card that is still in my machine, it only gets me around 1,6ms+3,2ms, and as it's not the same output as the output (the only reason to have more than one audio interface being to have separate outputs and inputs), the round trip then is only 4,8ms. But how can you compare that to 19ms?

I don't know what's up with your computer, but it's really really wrong going at 19ms latency imo. Even if you only play vaguely electronic pad chords, it's too much to be only bearable, far too much! Such latencies, you should only need to get in the area when you're at the end of a heavy project with all the mastering chain and bells&whistles in order to render the audio in online mode. Other than that, you're just carrying a dead horse!

But I guess if you're happy that's fine, have fun!

I'm using a Win7 64bit, with an i7 975 XE CPU. It's a decent PC or at least it was on 2011. People usually get better latencies with setups like mine, but i consider 10in 10out a bearable scenario, 10in 19out is starting to worry me, but don't forget that's 3 cents of a second as latency.

Thanks for your opinion in any case, i'm listening

Now I'm thinking that i recently updated Asio4all to 2.12, when i updated to 2.11 from 2.11 beta i had occassional sound drop-outs for some time until for some reason they vanished. Maybe that's happenning again with this update and therefore i would be able to apply more agressive asio4all settings after this, whatever this issue is, settles down again. Will post the answer here if/when i find out.
