Jupiter-80 with an Integra-7. Overkill?

Jupiter-80 with an Integra-7. Overkill?

Toying with the idea of an Integra-7 to go along with the Jupiter80. I'd have to sell my V-Synth GT to get it, but after a lot of hours behind it, I'm just not clicking with it. Sad, as I can see it's great synth. It's just not my cup of tea. I adore the Jupiter-80 OTOH.

So, a Jupiter-80 and an Integra-7 in one rig. Too much of one synth engine, or a splendid combination?

It isn't overkill for me. There is quite a bit of overlap, but also a lot of new sounds as well as all of the old stuff thrown in. The biggest difference is that the Jupiter 80 is more performance oriented and the Integra 7 is better for multitimbral and computer environments. If it hasn't been mentioned elsewhere, the Integra 7 has improved electric pianos, a few more ethnic instruments, much improved electric guitars, decent drum kits, and more waveforms in the synth section.

It is nice to know that Roland is adding to the sounds with the Legacy stuff, but I think they made a mistake in not delivering more in the acoustic modelling area. For example the drums that are based on V-Drum technology have very little editing capabilities. I realize that they probably wouldn't put the whole V-Drum engine in a substantially cheaper synth but a few things would have been nice. Same goes for the other acoustic stuff. The ARX expansions had a lot of editing possibilities; why take that away?

Anyway, I have only had it a few days so there is a lot to check out yet. It sounds great, has more and better supernatural sounds, and is pretty easy to navigate on the unit itself. It was worth it for me.

And one should also mention, that those are just the improvements of the SuperNATURAL engine alone, which is the Jupiter-80 engine.

As an owner of even two Jupiter-80s since May, those are exactly the reasons, why I feel somewhat betrayed by Roland Corp.

It would be nice to see the dedicated E-Piano Amp Models from the I-7 (coming from the ARX E-Piano board) on the JP-80 as well, like some of the enhanced and new SuperNATURAL Tones (e.g. E-Guitar, Choir), which are missing on the JP-80.

It's the same issue with the PCM waveforms in the SN-Synth's Osc section: Integra-7 offers 450 PCM waveforms to choose from, Jupiter-80 only 363...

If the JP-80 would receive an OS update, offering those enhancements from the I-7, than it would be an overkill to have both, if you don't need the SRX/Fantom/XV-5080 PCM Synth engine.

But I am afraid Roland won't give us those JP-80 updates, because they want us JP-80 owners to buy an Integra-7 too. They might change their minds, if JP-80 and JP-50 sales will drop drastically because of the Integra-7 release...

I think Roland should update the Jupiter 80 with all of the supernatural extras that are in the Integra 7, if possible. I'm glad that they are adding models and hope they continue to, but their flagship synth shouldn't be less capable than the module. I realize that you buy hardware "as is" and can't be sure that they will ever be updated. However, if you want to stay competitive you have to compete with software as well as hardware (at least to some extent). The Integra 7 corrects some of the Jupiter's shortcomings. Hopefully Roland left some headroom in the Jupiter to add things.

I pick up my Integra-7 tomorrow. On Saturday, I will go to pick up Mr. Rodriquez' (scottrod) V-Synth GT and another JD-990.

So, the new line up will be: Jupiter-80, 2 V-Synth GT's, a V-Synth XT, Fantom XR, XV-5080, JV-2080, JV-1080 and 4 JD-990's.

Now...THAT'S OVERKILL!

Nah, you can never have too many sweet sounds...and that's just the Roland ones! ;-))

Ok, you've talked me into it! (Like I needed help.)

Yes, many thanks to Doug (Soundworld A.D.) for the upcoming purchase. It will go toward the Integra!

I really like the Roland sound as well. I have the JP-80, JD-990, JD-800, D-550, JV-1080, JX-10.

The V-Synth GT and I just didn't click. I gave it many hours and dug into the unit, but it's just not me. It is definitely a sound-designer's synth, but my music is more orchestral/acoustic emulation. I really liked the Vocal Designer, but couldn't justify the expenditure for that function only.

Just picked up the Integra-7 on the way home from the airport! Looks nice sitting there next to the Jupiter but I've got no time to hook it up yet. Gotta fly early tomorrow to Dayton so Scott can get his I-7 too!

I was offered one yesterday at a great price, but I passed. Not interested in the legacy sounds and I'm very happy with the Jupiter. Instead, I put a $1500 down payment on a Vintage Vibe 64.

This sums up how I feel about Integra. I do want to hear more about the VV :p

Bruce makes a good point and it fit the gist of this thread. After printing out and going through the sound list, I saw all of the XV-5080 patches which are the PCMS part of the machine and I already had several of the SRX boards in my 5080 and Fantom XR. And I already have the JP-80 as well.

So why purchase it? For me it was to get the SRX boards that I didn't already have which are several. And the additional ethnic instruments that weren't already in the JP-80, most notablty the sarangi. I still haven't used or explored the Motional Surround enough to comment on it but it does add quite a pop to some of the demos which sound kind if thin without it.

The bottom line is it will fit some people's needs for their studio soundspace and not others. Was it "overkill" for me to get it? Perhaps but I'm not for one second regretting the purchase because at the end of the day, if it has only a few sounds that I didn't already have that fit into my tunes in some way it was worth it. And I have already found several of those!

Best of luck Bruce on the Vintage Vibe 64. Not sure what it is but I'm off to Google to find out. Always like to learn about new stuff even If I don't have the time to get and play them. As it is now with the OASYS, JP-80, and three V-Synth's I have my hands quite full!

SoundworldAD... I'm sure you will put your Integra to good use, so no need to feel its overkill.

Vintage Vibe 64 is an Electric Piano made by the Vintage Vibe company. They're pretty damn cool. I play all my piano on my acoustic Shigeru, so I figured getting a real EP would satisfy me the most.

Ha! Don't know about that pink one there Bruce, but that red sparkle just screams vintage! Waaayyy cool! Let us hear how it sounds.

Aw, actually I adore the pink one...it reminds me of the Mary Kay Cadillacs!

The sound of the Vintagevibe E-Piano in this video is indeed very similar to the sound of my original Fender Rhodes 73 Mark-I from the good old seventies!

I didn't know this company exist, but I already knew this company using the Rhodes name, which builds the Rhodes Mark-7 today:
