MIDI texts question for Nathan Sheldon

Nathan, can you recommend and in depth MIDI text for a relative MIDI neophyte. I am not afraid of complex concepts, but want something with depth and breadth that I can turn to as a learning curve type of manual. In other words, the most inclusive, from beginner to expert.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi mucsusn.

Man, I feel bad because I don't have anything to recommend. I've always been more of a "learn by osmosis" type of person and just pick things up from here and there. I can tell you that reviewing the MIDI implementation chart, though boring as hell, in your owner's manual is a good way to get an idea of how Roland uses MIDI in their instruments. They also have basic checksum calculating instructions and a number of real-world problems (and answers) to solve regarding MIDI data manipulation (primarily dealing with sysex messages). I learned almost all my MIDI knowledge from studying MIDI implementations (thoroughly) and looking things up with Google (extensively). Both are cheaper than buying books. :-)

Sorry I couldn't give you a good all-in-one MIDI manual recommendation.
