To import an SMF
Quoting the manual, pag. 282

“Place the files in the following folder : FantomG.Prj/SEQ/SMF folder

FantomG.Prj is the name of the project folder in the Fantom-G’s internal memory. Multiple projects can be saved in USB memory. By default, the project folder names will be numbered as FantomG001.Prj, FantomG002.Prj,etc., but the portion preceding the filename extension will be the project name you assign when saving the project.”

I will have to read that part again. I was able to import using USB MIDI with my computer no problem. I tried directly into USB memory slot on G and no go but obviously I was doing something wrong. I will investigate and get back with you with the results. :) PS: I'm glad I was mistaken about having to use a computer as the only means to import SMF. That's a big sigh of relief to know it can be done by going directly into the FG. :P Thanks for your reply V-CeeOh.. :)

Okay, I got it to work!! :) I now know what I did wrong but if I told everybody what it was it would be an embarassment to my ego. ;) What can I say?... :D I'm new to Roland workstations so you have to be patient with me. :)

BTW, this is a grrreeeeaaaaaaattttttttt Forum!!! That's all I gotta say... ;) Thanks again!

Let me guess. You didn't make a new project on the USB stick to put the SMF's in the first place =]

I did the same and phoned tech support because I have no way of using the USB cable with 64 bit operating system ;)

Agree.. Today, I say with a korg M3 with the new expanded (512) sound set.. Very nice update..Better grand pianos,Rhodes,Strings, winds, bassesOrgans..Percs, etc..

I might take back my G7 due to Korgs nice workflow..Sequencer is nice as well. And to beat a dead horse..but, 16 tracks.line up with 16 parts..

I like how the faders control the oragn patches for some real B3 control..

All, in all, I think that Roland is on the right path..., but, for $2800...these babys should have more sounds..

[Excuse the kinda off-topic post, but I'm referencing Quinnx' previous post in this thread:]
[Fantom-X:] 14.) Skipback sampling isolation ignoring anything routed to MON.
Quinnx:

Yup. You nailed that one on the head! That's the ONE thing missing in the new G that's killing me! No available MONITOR output! I thought I was the only one that noticed! Previously, on my Fantom-X, I used to record 100% of my solo playing (guitar and external keyboards) using the Fantom-X' skipback sampling feature, and setting all previously recorded audio tracks' output to "MON." In fact, the Fantom-X' skipback sampling feature was one of those "special" features that helped push me in favor of purchasing the X, over competing workstations.

I solo so much better when there's no pressure to get it right on a "hot" take. Now, on the G, without an available "MON" routing option (isolating everything but non-monitor routed input), I don't see how the G's skipback sampling is useful for anything at all, except for the very FIRST track you lay down, for which I generally DON'T need skipback sampling at all. This is the only thing that I REALLY need to work as it did in my X. If Roland fixed ONLY this ONE problem, I would be pretty happy with my new Fantom-G8.

And, unlike missing some favored SRX sounds, this is a problem that simply adding a Fantom-XR to my set-up, won't cure. I've whined enough about missing my SRX boards, and I'm over it. Not enough SRX sounds? No problem—I'll just get a Fantom-XR. Problem solved. But, no available monitor routing to enable isolated skipback sampling? Help me, Obi-Wan Rolande, you're my only hope!

Looks like we've gotten a little off topic. Although the SRX cards can be considered outdated technology, the sounds are some of the best in the entire Roland Catalogue. Most of us rely heavily on the SRX sounds. And of course Roland knows this. They also know we will have to purchase another piece of equpment (SRX compatible) to go along with the G. Whether it be an XR or Sonic Cell=More $ for Roland.

Bingo! And because they failed to provide SRX quality ("best of") within presets of Fantom G & failed to provide SRX slots, because they want to make money off Fantom X users I say: - UP YOURS ROLAND!
