srjv80 to SRX patches

sr-jv80 sounds for mc-909?

26 Dec 2007, 04:36
Hi,

What a great thread!!! This is really thinking outside the box and you deserve some serious kudos for working on it.

Now to my question- (I'm kinda new to all this so please bare with me...)

Do you think it would be possible to move (some of) the waves from the sr-jv80 card over to my mc-909?

In the past I played around with a friend's XP30 with the jv-80 15 special fx card and got some awesome stuff out of it...Think I'd have any luck trying to get those wave into my 909 or am I totally off track?

Cheers!

"As for the comparison between SRX and SRJV patches, I suspect it is universally acknowledged that Roland actually goofed it up, for the SRJV patches are vastly superior to those on the SRX cards, especially in a live setting. "

You know, I was thinking that as well- then I figured that Roland made 6-9 to be collections of the SR-JV cards. Why spend all that time creating brand new patches when they just needed to tweak or update existing ones (albeit with questionable quality). If they were to create all new patches from scratch- then they may as well not re-use (or at least publicize) the old JV cards at all.
But that is just my 2 cents- I am suprised how good a lot of the SR-JV patches sound on my Sonic Cell.

Does anyone have anything for srx 09 done yet? this is a pain in the a$$............

I can load the patches but the waves are all off and set to SAMP...But here's the question....Are the rest of the settings correct other than the wave? Is the waves the only things that are off? Today is perfect for doing this job since there's a blizzard outside today and everything here is at a hault.

Septimo, I have done the SR-JV80-05 World conversion already. it is on the Sonic Cell group site (in the files section). BUT- your SRX 09 card must be in slot A or it won't work (unless you want to do Slot B and convert it all again- then post it- that would be cool).

EDIT: Sorry, just saw that you don't have a Sonic Cell- so you will have to go and manually change the waves to your card location on your Fantom.

javaj, thanks for the invite...I appreciate that...No, I don't have sonic cell... I don't mind doing the work, but I just don't know what waves go where..or how many of the tones to turn on....If some one could let me know that, that would be awesome....is there a list that says anything about this?

another thing,,,, when you load them in to the fantom and there are no sounds, are the tone settings correct except the waves numbers? or are the tone settings, waves and everything all jumbled up? In other words, do they have to be rebuilt up from scratch, or are the waves the only things I have to deal with?

OK, but only the 05 worked out the best. Leave all the tones as is- all you need to do is adjust the waveforms for each tone. Go into the WG page, and for each tone, click on the Wave Group drop down and choose the location of the world card (this will work for your other SRX cards as well).
Only do the ones where the tones are already enabled (no use dong the rest for now at least).
One issue you will come across, is that some wavegroups may point to an internal waveform from your Fantom. You will need to open up the XV5080 manual and cross reference the waveform it is looking at and change it to your Fantom-x equivalent (luckily this is only on a handfull of patches- BUT this is not the case on the other SRJV banks- which is why I only did the 05 conversion).
Hopefully that makes sense

Thanks javaj! I'll try that tonight....So all I have to do is switch the enabled waves to EXP-C and all should be good right? The number is correct right? Okay cool, I'll se what I get...I thought they were still wrong if I just changed them from SAMP to EXP C thinking it would be still a wrong wave. And I did activate some inactive tones wich made things sound weird...maybe that was my problem.

Thanks again! :)

Yes, don't change the actual wave number- just the location and it should point to the correct wave on the card.
Tell me how it goes (and oh, I expect it will take you a few days unless you get a good rhythm going).

Re: srjv80 to SRX patches

7 Feb 2008, 14:48
Hey javaj...It's going pretty good so far...I've done the first 27 as of this point...But I had to move my SRX's from their loactions and arrange them differently because when I was changing the wave from SAMP to EXP-C, I had to through EXP A and B first. And so in B I had SRX 04(strings) and that only has 196 waves so it was resetting whatever the wave number it was to the 196 max as soon as I pass through B to get to C..If the wave was under 196 then it was okay but anything over would stay 196...this is what was making me think the wave numbers were off too.. So I put SRX09 in A, SRX 04 in C, and SRX SRX05 in D,,(After I did this I remembered I can just go directly to C by pressing ENTER and bypassing A and B, but oh well....) and so I'll put SRX 06 in B so I don't go thorugh that again with that board..And it seems to make more sense for me in this order..Luckily the already made sequences will recognise the patch no matter what bank slot the card is in...I think I read this.. I haven't tested that theory yet..;).It sounds more confusing than it is, but I understand the deal now...Thanks again...I'll probably post it in here after I finish it and make a librarian file for it, but I'm not sure if any would need it unless they have that card in slot A. If not it would be the same as them doing themselves, no? Well maybe it'll be a bit easier since all they would have to change is the slot letter.

Are the effects at the correct settings? I noticed that all of the have them EQ set to the MFX, but I still here them set differently as if they are correct.

I would assume the effects are correct. I didn't come across any that seemed wrong. At least with this effort, you are giving yourself FREE "new" sounds that you don't already have.
Tell me how it goes with the other banks- I assume you are doing the SR-JV80-05 first?

Septimo, I thought I would update you. I discovered that NO, the effects settings are wrong. What you will need to do is download an old manual (like the XV5080 or similar). Go the the MFX section. Now, for the SRJV80 Latin and Asia patches- you will need to change EVERY default MFX setting. Basically look at the effects number that shows up- look it up on the old XV manual- and then remap it to the equivalent Fantom effects. You will see what I mean if you look at the XV MFX list versus the Fantom one. Once I did this- all the patches sounded great.

I also took my waveform mapping (you can find it on the Sonic Cell Yahoo user group FYI) and for all the internal waveforms- I cross referenced them to the equivalent Fantom/Sonic Cell waveform (you will come across some waveforms that either don't have an equivalent from the XV to Fantom- or or named slightly different).

I am working on the main SRJV world patches and thankfully- these were early patches and only used the default EQ MFX #1 on every patch (so not switching them- I just have to remap and internal patches).

One more thing- when you do convert, you will notice that most patches only use 1 or 2 layers. Make sure you also engage the 3 and 4th layer waveforms. When you do this- you will notice that, if you do enable the extra layers- the sounds are enhanced (actually, I find that a lot of sounds are better if you do enable the extra layers so you may want to save them as the default).

Hey javaj...

Sorry, I didn't see this thread earlier....

Thanks for the info....Yeah that's what I figured about the effects...bummer...but it was that reason that I stopped working on them and instead am looking at them as stepping stones to making custom patches with the patterns they have already in place. then add my own effects...I am no longer trying to recreate them entirley...Thanks for giving me the heads up also on engaging the extra tones...will give that a go tonight...

let us know what else you find out if you do....

thanks again man, i appreciate it...

Hey Septimo,
I completed all the SRX-09 conversion. That is, all the patches that Roland included. I decided to look at the extra waveforms that were included from the Country SRJV card- lo and behold, all they did was remove all the percussion waveforms but included the rest (about 60 or so were removed from the Country card).
I posted already that I am looking for someone with the original SR-JV80 country card to pass me the patches. I can then convert them (as long as they don't include percussion waves).

I am also going to check out the other included patches Roland provided- like you- I am thinking that they may be good starting points for creating new sounds (I think I will start with the SRX-07 patches).
In the end, Roland did some great programming for these patches- and we can simply substitute raw waveforms to get the same expressiveness.

Man, I wish Roland would give us a large user bank- I have 750 plus patches with one SRX card.

SRX09 Conversion

29 Oct 2008, 11:48
JavaJ,

This is a longshot, since your last post on this subject was many months ago.

I am about to embark on converting the patches from my SRX-09 CD to my Fantom X6, and I saw that you have already completed this huge effort.

Would you be willing to share your librarian file, so that I could expedite the process of my own conversion?

Thanks!

Jeff

I know this is late but I MAY still be able to help or not - maybe too late?

I have a XV-5080 (fully populated):

JV cards:
SR-JV80-04 Vintage Synth; and
SR-JV80-08 Keyboards of the 60's &70's (in lieu of the SRX-07 and after reading all the posts I am glad I did this plus it freed up an SRX slot);
SR-JV80-17 Country;
SR-JV80-15 Special FX. Installed I also have a SR-JV80-07 Super Sounds not installed.

SRX Cards:
SRX-01 Dynamic Drums; SRX-03 Studio; SRX-06 Complete Orchestra; and SRX-09 World Collection.

On the Fantom XR
SRX-04 Symphonique Strings;
SRX-10 Big Brass Ensemble;
SRX-11 Complete Piano;
SRX-12 Classic Eps; and
two freebies from Roland for buying t the XR: SRX-97 Jon Lords Rock Organ and SRX-98 Analog Essentials

You can see that dance, hip-hop, etc. are not my “thing.” I also have a GR-50, Aleisis QS8, QSR, Motif XS-7 and a Alesis Fusion 8HD (a really badly maligned and misunderstood synth– and frankly a great secret weapon)

Now in a few forum places I’ve seen folks ask for the JV Country "patches." But not sure in what state or format they are asking for these ”patches”? Do you mean to move/copy the patches into the user bank (128 at a time) then make an SVD or librarian file (and for which editor/librarian?) Also I assume you’d need to know WHICH slot the SR-JV card was in the XV-5080 - so that the sample reference location could be correctly “corrected?”

If that’s the case I might be able to get these out BUT – who knows an EASY way to copy 128 ROM patches to user memory (I have three XV-5080 editors (Roland’s free one, Sound Quests XV-EditPro, and MidiQuest (which has never worked correctly for any roland gear I have/had XV5080, GR50, XP30, or D110). However, NONE seem to do bulk copy or cut and paste

Thanks for any help on help to get this Country patch set out
Larry
