Anyone know how to do this?

Anyone know how to do this?

17 Jan 2007, 18:46
I posted this msg a while ago on "Other Roland Gear, butgot response. So I'm hoping someone may have the answer in this topic.

Have been lurking here for a while and find this a very useful site. And well organized, too. Thanks!

I've scoured all Roland support sections, but they're no help, and they don't reply to emails anymore:<

I've had a VR-760 for a year or so and use it onstage a lot. Now I wonder if someone can assist with the below:

I'm attempting to rename registrations and can't get the new name to stick.

I'll call up the Reg, foloow the renameing procedure in the manual on Page 69

The new name will show OK *as long as I don't change any settings*. But if any changes and I return to the changed reg, it displays the original name, not the edited one.

For example, if I try to change "Jimmy1" to "Jimmy2", and exit the rename function (after pressing Enter), as long as I don't press any buttons, the new name is OK on the LCD.

But if I Press another registration and come back to the Jimmy2 location, it shows its original name.

What am I doing wrong here?

I can call up a reg, make changes to its parameters, write it back to that reg, and that sticks. But the name change doesn't.

Sure will appreciate any ideas anyone has.

What I want to accomplish is creating a bank of 8 organ settings that I can pedal-push onstage to get a variation of organ tones in the middle of a solo...like using the presets on a B3

TIA much,
BC

Welcome to the Roland Clan

I understand your frustration but we try to keep things well organized over here so I moved your thread to the place were it belongs ( yes, it's "Other Roland Gear") ;-)

back to your problem, have you tried to do a reset? If you follow the "write" procedure correctly there must be something wrong.

Regards

I moved the thd to the other forum because nobody had looked at or replied to this message here in the Other Roland Gear topic.

Yes, I had tried reset and that doesn't help. There are no other signs of anything wrong with this VR-760, so I question that something has been left out of the manual.

Perhaps this forum is not the place to get this answer as it seems nobody knows much about the VR-760. And Roland is no help either. They do not reply to emails or reply to phone requests.

Their tech support is certainly light years behind Korg's or Yamaha's when it turns out they can't or won't support their products.

Just joined the "Clan" so I didn't see this until now - anyway are you OK with this now - I've changed a lot of registration names and it works well - remember to "WRITE" immediately. I can get a more detailed step if you're still in trouble :)

Hi There,
The only thing I can think of that might be your problem is you must remember to press the write button after the ok or you will lose the patch name you have created.
I love my VR 760 I am still coming up with new sounds for it everyday and I have had mine for over 3 years.

Joeye and Jon From......

Thanks for your replies.

Joeye: No I am not OK with this (see below).

Both: Yes I tried dozens of times to use the WRITE command as you suggest and as is specified in the manual. It never works, as well as about ten other procedures that do not work, including layering, saving voice edits, attempting to update the OS, and others.

Without getting too complicated in this msg, the bottom line is that I have a VR-760 with what Roland, myself, and three highly experienced and regarded keyboard (synth) techs (including one certified by Roland) agree is at least a hardware failure and possibly a software failure also, although a software failure cannot be proved until the hardware pieces are replaced and tested.

So my VR-760 is on its way to Roland-LA for repairs. I find this quite disappointing since there are relatively few gigs on this machine, its always transported in a solid, high-quality case, and is supposed to be built like a tank (one of the reasons I purchased the VR-760 as opposed to other excellent choices).

On Roland's advice, I opened the VR up to see if any chips (or others) were catywampus. Everything was sanitary and quite as it should be. Since it was, all signs point to a failed component.

I am now looking at other synths to replace it since I need something very reliable for touring

Sorry , sounds like a lemon . I hope you find a replacement . My 760 spends hours in the back of trucks , on planes and has been droped by a roadie ! I must be lucky . What sold me on this board was drawbars ,waterfull key-b and les -sim as I was replacing a Hammond Xb2 that had bit the dust .
Good Luck,
Jon.

Sorry to hear your experience with the VR. I've had no trouble and it's been with me in and out of cars without any damage at all. If you're satisfied with the sounds (I also have a X6 but I need the VR760 for better organ-feeling :) you should probably give it another chance!

Joeye and Jon From,

Thanks, guys, for your condolences.

Yeah, I'm quite taken aback about the lack of reliability/ruggedness of my VR-760 and I know others like you who have put their VRs through lots more gigs than I have without any trouble whatsoever.

I agree that mine is acting like a lemon, but I doubt Roland will ever acknowledge that, so I'll be forced to pay more than 1/2 what I paid for it in order to get the repairs done, based on what they said on the phone.

But maybe I'll get lucky and it won't cost that much to fix it. It should be on their bench in a day or so, so we'll see what we see.

Irregardless, it has still soured me big time on Roland. I have only two [piece of Roland gear, the VR and a JV-2020 sound module. Both have proven unreliable.

Additionally, I have a friend who bought an RD-700 from Roland and his machine has proven to be unreliable, too, despite all the TLC in the world. And that guy has been an engineer in the music manufacturing business for decades, so he really knows how to take care of electronic instruments.

You're both right on about the waterfall, drawbars and Leslie sim, which (in addition to the supposed reputation for reliability) is why I got the VR in the first place. It is (or could be) a very cost-effective gig board given its schlepp factor.

Oh well...I guess better luck next time.

Joeye, will I give it another chance? Don't know until I discover what went wrong with it, but I'm looking toward a Yamaha XS-76 now, which, even though it lacks drawbars, waterfall keys, and the degree of amp/Leslie/etc. controls, is the same weight and has way more decent presets and other goodies. It does have the ability to program enough sliders to act like drawbars, as well as tweak the Leslie sim. Plus, it has much more useful connectivity than the VR. And I've owned many Yamahas and only one went South. Yamaha, in an instant, recognized it was a lemon and had a replacement in my studio within two days.

Additionally, Roland's web presence is primitive compared to Yamaha and Korg. For example, there is no link to this Roland Clan site, so a Roland user has no idea that this site exists since it doesn't show up in Google lists, except way down the hierarchy. Moreover, there is a huge resource of Yamaha 3rd-party sounds, products, and aftermarket documentation. And, it is real easy to get online with some of the more savvy Yamaha developers and techs. That's not at all the case with Roland. They act like they don't want to be bothered by users. And in my experience, sales people at Roland outloets know way less about their producs than their counterparts at Koeg and Yamaha stores.

So the bottom line is that the Korg and Yamaha experience has been way more user-friendly than Roland's. And I'm not the only muso who feels that way

We'll see about the VR. Stay tuned. I'll let you know what I find out from Roland-LA.

Thanks for your interest. It's really appreciated to finally uncover some guys who know something about the VR-760.

Play well and break lots of legs!

Hope all goes well , Roland should look after you if your VR 760 is faulty. I am in Australia and Roland over here have looked after me in the past . The only issue I have had in the past was some cracked hammers on my RD500 but it was 12yrs old . I know what you mean regarding Yamaha , tough as nails . I had an old Clavinova as my first stage piano in 1989 . It fell of stage twice and was also thrown through my cars rear window and all it needed was a new power cable !!! I own a 30yr Yamaha old powered desk that just keeps working . In the end I still use 2 Roland keyboards on stage ( Fantom X8 & VR760)because I found them easy to use and I got a better deal from the retailers .
I would like to see Yamaha produce a clonewheel with some of the Motif features but for now I will stick with my 760.
Good Luck,
Jon.

Thanks, Jon!

:):):) re the Clavinova! It must have been consuming mass quantities of Kickapoo Joy Juice and had an Abo charm spell on it to survive all that.

Ditto a Yamaha clonewheel. I'd like one in my Christmas stocking with the same controls as a VR-760 plus a bunch of Yamaha's best presets with as much ability to tweak as a Motif, USB both ways, plus Firewire, XLR and 1/4" outs, full pedal ins and only 35 pounds. ;)

Hi

I have the same problem and cannot fathom out why. Let me know if you cure it!

I also have a couple of issues which are really annoying:

1. When switching from one instrument to another, the overall volume is reset. This makes it impossible to use in real terms as, when using different instruments in say one song, the "switched to" instrument comes up at deafening volume. The master volume control seems to get reset each time.
2. When playing along to the onboard drum machine, changing a voice/instrument also changes the drum pattern. So, if you want to keep a certain drum pattern but change voices/instruments, it is impossible.

Both are highly annoying and make it unuseable unless you want to keep to the same voice/instrument throughout the whole song.

Is it me doing something stupid? I did post on this before (see below) but didn't understand the answers (sorry guys) as they seemed to suggest this is normal!

Cheers

John

Hi John, Once I have set and written the volume levels for each patch , they stay where I have set them . The drum machine I don't use but I have come accross this problem and it would be nice to change patches without a change of drum pattern .
Jon.
