need XV88 or Fantom X8 advice
27 Dec 2006, 07:22Hello Roland users,
For chrismass day I was asked to play in a band to play in a childrens christmassmusical. (I'm not english, sorry if spelling and words are not correct). I could borough a XV88 from a friend for the event. I picked it up on my way to the first rehearsel, so without using the XV before I did the rehearsel. For this musical I needed many differend sounds. Another guy was playing the grand piano, my job was to fill in the other sounds. I was amazed by how quick I got used to this keyboard. Using the patch finder I found the sounds very quick. Using the zone function I had performances with 4 differend sounds with level control using the 4 faders both in split and layer configurations setup in minutes. There was no delay in the rehearsel session because I had to adapt to this new instrument, which is very important when working with groups of children. I had the keyboard at home for one week before the final show and I could really quick edit the patches in detail, and setup the final performances for each song. Especially the nummeric keypad, the sliders, the zones function and the performance function are very good for live players. And the keyboard action is perfect for my play style.
But in the current Roland line of products the XV does not exist anymore. And the Fantom X8 does have some very nice additions like the pads, the sampler, the sequencer/HD recorder and USB connectivity. I really like these features because it makes the X8 more a writing tool, and I'm writing a musical at the moment myself. But I'm afraid it is not as quick and flexible to use in a live setting as the XV88.
My questions:
1: Does the Fantom has the same full, warm sound as the XV88? Does it have the same DA convertors and build in waveforms.
2: The X8 seems to me more like a studio instrument. Is it as quick and flexible in a Live setting as the XV88?
3: Is the keyboard the same, does it has the same action?
4: I'm also looking at the Alesis Fusion 8HD. Because of the Fm and VA synthesis. Does anyone has any experience in using that one live? Does it has also has the standard soundset for musical-like productions?
Bottom line, should I try to get a second hand XV88 or should I go for a Fantom X8 (or maybe the Alesis Fusion 8HD).
Thanks for reading this long story, and thanks in advance for any reply.
Greetings,
Wilmar Boer
