This is a video of someone using Kontakt 2 on their computer to play some awesome guitar sounds from their keyboard.

I just recently got my Fantom X8, and have been messing around a bit with the distortion guitar patches, which are overall all pretty good, but when I play chords fast, the quality kindof breaks down.

Can I make a multisample patch for my Fantom that sounds as great as the guitar in that video by purchasing a Sample DVD like this [http://cgi.ebay.com/DISTORTION-Halion-Kontakt-exs24-nnxt-wav_W0QQitemZ320040259815QQihZ011QQcategoryZ41785QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem], or is Kontakt 2 (or other computer programs) the only way I am going to get such authentic sounds?

Uhhhh! . . . Pardon your ignorance, Mans, but what is stopping the Fantom X from triggering the samples off of a computer. It is not the keyboard creating the sound, rather the software. That is what is done on the video. On top of that, the Fantom is not only acting as a MIDI controller, but can create lush pad sounds as well as killer leads without being encumbered by velocity-switched phrase sampling which is used extensively in the video demo.

I will admit, however, that I was not as careful as I should have been in quickly answering his patch creation question. I was not saying that the Fantom was capable of easily duplicating the complex guitar phrases, rather that it is capable of triggering them, with the added benefit of accessing the amazing pallette of internal sounds the Fantom already allows you to use.

Cheers! :>)

Yes the fantom can act as a midi controller.. that's kinda obvious and obviously not what was meant by the topicstarter.

I know I could just trigger the sounds using my fantom as a midi controller, but I want to be able to do this independent of my computer if possible.

To clarify, are you're saying I cannot purchase an expensive set of samples like the Prominty LPC samples (lets just say they came in WAV format, but these particular ones don't) and create a patch, for example, that plays palm muted guitar when the keys are hit at a certain velocity, heavy open distortion at another, and pinch harmonics at another?

Then the second question is, if that is possible, can the fantom play fast distortion rhythms and still sound good, assuming I am using the expensive samples I bought?
something like this:

Also, what do you mean by phrases? Was the guy in the video not playing a key for every note sounded (besides chords)?

Well that sampleset is 15 gigs I believe so there's no way to get that in the Fantom.

And the guy in video was keyswitching. There are several layers of samples assigned to the keyboard and by hitting the keys in the low register (which you can see him do) he's switching layers.

But he IS playing the notes.

--> Correction the complete sampleset is 60 gigs.

Well I have an 8 GB Sandisk CF Card used with a Kingston PCMCIA Adapter as well as a 512 mb RAM upgrade.
Even if there are several layers of samples I wouldn't need more than 512 mbs of samples at any given time. I wouldn't be using the whole 60 gb of samples obviously, just my favorite ones.

I apologize for my ignorance, but is keyswitching possible in the fantom?

I don't own one (yet ;) but reading the manual I don't think it's possible.

Well, then I guess I will have to make a patch that has articulation changes relying upon velocity changes.

Can anyone second that the fantom does not support keyswitching?

what do you mean by key switching???

from what i understand of it, keyswitching is using assigned keys to activate different layers of a patch
