Why is analog synthesis (mostly) a thing of the past?

For sure we should get together! Colfax is a trip- full of culture, history and crackheads... So- you know the demo video you did when the V first came out, the one where you are showing off all the crazy functions of the v (it mentions revolution studios in a caption in the bottom at the beginning)- well I saved that video onto my hard drive and watched it repeatedly because I wanted a v-synth so bad after seeing it and couldn't afford one- well I sold all my gear on craigslist, and spent my rent money and wasted ALL of my school loans on getting one- I ended up a bum without a place for a few months staying at friends houses bringing the board with me everywhere- this was all your fault man . We should kick at cafe netherworld sometime- they have a bar and internet and a lounge area and shit- we could chat it up there or whatever- Or If you are in town, I will be throwing a show to recoup some funds spent on a cd release in the next month or two- it will be pure local electronic music, mostly industrial, electronica, idm/experimental and drum and bass- some awesome talent will surely be lurking.

Theologia- are you a Denver head too?

Hi there Guys

I have owned a few analogue's in my time.. Alpha Juno1,Juno106,SH-09,Korg poly800, 2 big Yamaha beasties (think they were the cs30 and cs50)

In my opinion the VA's on the market at the moment are getting damn close to the real thing.. Ok purists will say that some of the warmth is lost.

However i have an Access Virus C and it is damn hard to tell the difference between it and a true analogue.. Some of the softsynths in the last few years are also pretty impressive

Give it a year or two and you won't be able to tell the difference with processor enhancements and new DSP coding..

It may just be time to let the old work horses go :-(.. However i will say that nothing does a hoover sound like an Alpha Juno :-)

Cool, lets hook it up! You are truly hard core! I would love to meet other people making cool electronic music. Keep in mind I don't know any of the spots in Denver so, we'll have to meet at a GC because I know where those are. :-)

Thanks! Those songs were all recorded live on the fly and composed the very intant I recorded them (thats why they are a little repetitive). I pretty much just grabbed a handfull of loops I had made in the vsynth/kontakt and ran them through multiple instances of a granular/beatslicer plug. I hit record and mutilated them via midi controller hooked up to my plugs via ableton live and had an arpeggio going on the v. Live music improv is some of my favorite stuff, very inspiring and fresh if done right...

anyhow, when you get back into denver you can hit me up too. I'm always looking for new aquantances that are into production or interested in audio. Denver is awesome, I have left a million times and always am happy to be back!!

Analog Guitar Synths verses the Digital ones

4 Aug 2007, 03:05
I own and use both the old Analog GR-300 guitar synth and the newer GR-30. Although the GR-30 is better in that it can store my patches, can make hundreds of sounds, never goes out of tune and can control other bits of kit via MIDI it still doesn't move as much air as the old GR-300 which tracks truer and sounds better even if it can only make a few sounds. That being said, the GR-300 goes out of tune, breaks and requires repair, and playing live at a gig is sort of like riding naked in a shopping cart down a steep hill.

But I love both.

When I hear some VA synths like a Blofeld, it makes me want to puke. They just sound like junk to me.
I fell in love with a Moog Rogue when I heard it played by someone who knew what they were doing. When I do get a synth (I just do the rompler thing now), that's probably what I will get.
My dream analog synth would be an Alesis A6 Andromeda. The stuff I heard so far that was done with it, is the best sounding synth stuff I have ever heard. I kind of doubt I'd have enough time to spend to make good sounding music with it, though.
