Help needed to decide on V-Synth.

Help needed to decide on V-Synth.

21 Jan 2005, 11:58
Hi Gang

well after waiting to see what Korg had to offer at NAMM, I feel it was a big let down.

I've been interested for some time in V-Synth and want to know more about it, also now the Rack is out is there a feature list to compare the two anywhere ? ┘┘Knowing Roland I don▓t suppose there is a downloadable Manual.

I understand the Rack has two Cards installed, can you also install two Cards in the Keyboard version ?
Plus I would love some info on the Vocal Card.

The Roland sites I▓ve looked on are very sketchy with not much info.

Any help or links would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Trev.

Hi Trev, the V-Synth is cabable of one emulation at a time and has only 1 card slot. So if you wanted to switch between cards on the V-synth you have to switch it off and reboot.

The advantage of the XT is that the VC1 & 2 are built in and can be slected without switching it off. It remains to be seen how this would work in a "live" setting.

Manuals are availible http://www.roland.com/manuals/en/index_alpha.html
It may be a while before the new ones are availible.

Back in a while.

According to what I've read at www.roland.com, the XT has exactly the same specs as the V-Synth.

This is interesting. I knew this was the case for the d50-card, but if it's true for the vocal-card, it's really a let-down. I would love to be able to use the vocal-card simultaneously as the V-Synth itself.
This puts things in a different perspective for me, actually. I was really set out to get the keyboard-version, but now I think the rack will be more suited.

One question, though. How much space will the rack require? When I had the yamaha A4000, I thought it took way too much space. Since I don't own a rack I had to put it on my desk, and this was not a very good thing as it was so deep (regarding size)...

Ok, sorry, I've now seen the picture of it on roland.co.uk, and it is not a traditional rack at all; instead it's a very cool solution where you can put it into a rack, but also, use it as a kind of desktop-thingy. Very cool :)

But I am a little confused; if you check out this link - http://www.roland.com/products/en/V-Synth_XT/specs.html , it appears there are d-beams in the unit. But I can't see it in the picture...?

Hi Gang

WoW.......Roland releasing Manuals on line, thats a welcome change, it can only help sales.

Its going to be hard to decide between them, I love the idea of the Rack and two Cards but would also like the control the Keyboard gives.

Do you know how much the Vocal card costs ?

Thanks for the info Lads, much appreciated.

Yeah, it's a tough choice. I've now read the specs, however, and looked closely at the pictures. It appears the specs are identical initially, but there are naturally some differences aswell.
The rack doesn't have a timetrip pad, and sadly no d-beams. But it does have some advantages; it can send audio through USB, it has the d-50 and vocal cards already built-in. What's cool is that you don't have to reboot the synth in order to use them (as you must do on the original). You just switch between them.

If the vocal card is expensive, it is big plus to have it included in the rack...

But at what price? You will still pick up a used V-synth, buy the cards and still be left with change in your pocket compared to the rack, at least that is my guess.

And how are you going to play the rack?

My thoughts for you to mull over

According to what I've heard, the XT really can access the built-in V-cards at the same time with the internal engine (one card at a time). I don't know if it can access a future VC card from the PC card slot this way too.

Yes, it all comes down to the price (well at least to some degrree ;)

"And how are you going to play the rack?"
I'll play it with my Motif, but as stated earlier, I'll be missing the d-beams and the ttp.
And also; if the vocal-card is expensive it'll certainly be a big plus to have it built into the rack.

Bad news: according to Rollerator at HC, the XT will be 2500$.
No longer part of the gang...

Well, adding to that the taxes that will come on top, it'll still be a little cheaper than the original.
I have more or less decided to go for the rack...

Anyone know when it'll ship?

Maybe the same time as the OS ships in February?
