Creating string trills

Creating string trills

Maybe this has been thought of before, but I just had this inspiration. I've been trying to come up with a way to do good sounding string section trills for a while now. As you know, just playing 2 notes rapidly in succession makes for a rather undesirable effect, because then all the strings are trilling at the exact same time and rate. Finally I got this idea to use LFO to simulate string trills, by setting up a different time and rate of LFO on each of 4 string tones in a patch, and with each tone panned differently, and some reverb, I got a reasonably good trill patch. Here's a quick demo mp3

trills

Has anyone here been doing this already and I'm way behind the curve? I thought it might be interesting for people who like doing orchestral music.

The results you got sound pretty convincing! Nice work.

Thanks. the mp3 starts with each of the 4 tones played separately to hear what I did. Then the mix of them all together with some reverb. I have it set up so that one of the assignable sliders is used for going between half and whole step trills. I'm still tweaking on it a bit, I think the first tone is a bit too slow, but the speeds have to all be different so that they don't go into unison. I think it will work pretty well when in an orchestral setting and not completely exposed.

Well, the only thing is I created the patch on my xp-80. I have the orchestral II card in there and I was needing it for the XP, not the Fantom. I just thought I'd let everybody here know sort of how i did it so that you knew it could be done and maybe someone could take my ideas and make a similar Fantom patch out of it. Otherwise i'd have been glad to share the patch.
