Question about Phantom Power (again)

Question about Phantom Power (again)

12 Jan 2006, 15:16
I have a Multi-track recorder that has phantom power. Does this mean I can use it the usual way, but then go into the roland fantom X8 with an RCA Digital Cable? ? ?

might sound like something I can just try, but I dont want to cause problems with the fantom X inputs if it's something I shouldn't attempt.

Shaun William,

This should be OK and won't cause problems with the Fantom.

Hey Bassman, I tried this last nite. I hooked up the condensing Mic to my multi-track recorder with phantom power,

and then I Ran RCA outputs (Left and Right) to the Audio inputs (Left and Right) to the Fantom X. However, there was ALOT of Static and Fuzz. It sounded better with a Cheap mic plugged directly in the Fantom X. Is there a reason for this, or is my multi-track not made to really function that way and I need a decent mixer?

Also, I was using RCA outputs to 1/4" inputs, but the 1/4" were not "balanced" cables. Do you know if that is the reason for the fuzz? And is it possible to get RCA to 1/4" balanced?

Shaun William,

I can't really say what the cause of the distortion is until there is some detail.

What type of Multi-Track and what are your settings?

What type of microphone?

Give exact detail as to which outputs on the mixer you are coming out of .

You may indeed be better with a mixer that is made for this type of thing, as opposed to a Multi Track. Let us know the answers to the above questions and folks will be able to assist.

Thanks Bassman...The Multi-Track is the Zoom MRS-802CD, and the Microphone is a RODE Condensing Mic. The outputs on the multi-track are the digital outputs Left and Right. (RCA cable outputs)

Here's my setup: I plug in the Mic to the input of the Multi-track with an XLR cable. Then I have to press INPUT, and it turns red, just like on the fantom X. Then, I run digital outs (rca cable) to AUDIO inputs 1/4" of the Fantom, and press input on the fantom, too. (creates Fuzz, not clear)

Also, some more info....If I do want to record a Whole Sequenced Song to the multi-track from the fantom, I use 1/4" balanced outputs of the fantom x to 1/4" balanced inputs to the Zoom multi-track. The Zoom accepts 2 XLR inputs, But you can also can use 1/4", which is what I use (to record sequenced song.) It is the Same Slot, and it fits an XLR or a 1/4". My Rode Mic is an XLR.

Possibly what I am getting at is Maybe I need a different cable for the Condensing Mic - One that ends in a 1/4" balanced instead of XLR? (not sure)

Possibly I need to run the digital outputs on Zoom to the Digital In on the Fantom (instead of digital outs to Audio inputs on fantom?)

Shaun,

A couple of things to do right off with the info you provided. . . .

Definitely go Digital to Digital from the Zoom to the Fantom.
It is OK to use the XLR cable.
Check the battery in your Condenser microphone to make sure it is good.

Let us know what you get.

Ok I will let you know with digital to digital. Do you know the exact way to set it up? Because the zoom has a left and right outputs, but I know the fantom only has one slot for "digital in."

That is interesting because I didn't know the Mic had a battery inside. Thanks for your help.
