Bug with time-modulation - OS 2.01 only?

Bug with time-modulation - OS 2.01 only?

I've found a quite annoying and surprising bug with the time-modulation of the sampling-engine of my Fantom X7 (running OS 2.01). This bug prevents the time-modulation to work with any samples that are played at the very same pitch and tempo as defined in the sample?s settings.

Please try the following to reproduce the bug:

- First, make sure that the Preset-sample P0001 is loaded - otherwise press "Sample List", "Preset", select "P0001 I'm Crazy", press "Load Utility", "Load" and "Exec".

- Now we're creating a simple patch with this sample. Start by pressing "Patch Edit", change into section "Pro Edit". Use the function "Util menu", "1 Patch Initialize", "Select" and "Exec".

- Stay in "Patch Edit", change into the section "Wave". Change "Wave Group" to "SAMP", "Wave Bank" to "PRST" and "Wave No. L (Mono)" to "1" in order to use the "I'm Crazy"-sample for this patch. Set "Wave Tempo Sync" to "ON".

- Press F2 several times to go down to the section "CTRL 1". Here, change "CTRL 1 Source" to "CC01:MODULATION" (which actually is the joystick's vertical axis), set "CTRL1 Destination 1" to "TIME" and "CTRL1 Sens 1" to "-63". Check that "CTRL1 Switch 1" of Tone 1 is set to "ON".

- Press the "Tempo"-button, enter "104" BPM (the "original" tempo of the "I'm crazy"-sample") and close the "Tempo"-window by pressing F8.

- Push the joystick all the way up and play some tunes on the keyboard. You will hear stuttering sounds because the sample is "frozen" by the time-modulation - unless you play the note C4. Here the time-modulation will not work at all, the sample is played back at normal speed.

The interesting part is that even the slightest change in pitch or tempo will make the time-modulation to work again. Play C4 again with the joystick pushed up, but this time also move it a little to the left or right for some pitch-bending - and voila: the time-modulation is back.

As a workaround for this bug, just apply some slight detuning in your patch, for example by adjusting the "Tone Fine Tune"-parameter in the "Pitch"-section to "1" or "-1".

Does this bug occur on your Fantom X as well? Any comments on this are appreciated - especially some info on other OS-versions ...

Thanks a lot for checking! :)

I am not sure your result is the bug or just extreme unrealistic setting. Why do you need Ctrl 1 sensitivity to -63??
According to the manual:
Wave Tempo Sync function is part of Real Time Stretch function. If the wave group is "samp" or "msam", and the wave Tempo Sync Parameter is turned on, you can vary the playback speed of the waveform without affecting the pitch.
(I think someone posted the availability of this function with FX.) It works better if Ctrl 1 sensitivity to +30 and play lower than C4 keys. This function seem useful to put phrases with diferent tempo in the mix without affecting overall Tempo of the songs. If sensitivity is too extreme, it gonna play sample with infinite tempo.

I decided to set the CTRL 1 modulation to the extreme value of -63 to make things very clear - but the effect can be seen with lower values as well. It is definitely a bug, because when you play the original key of the sample while the Fantom is set to the same tempo as the tempo-setting that is defined with the sample, the time-modulation will not work at all.

I also think that the realtime stretch function was designed by Roland in order to match phrases to different song-tempos, but it can provide some real stunning effects when pushed to the limit. I personally really like this stuttering sound when the time-modulation is set to high negative values ... :)

Just a FYI. This happens with version 2.0. I noticed this not too long ago also. I haven't updated to 2.01.
