Problems w/ connecting to PC via USB cable

23 May 2005, 22:35
Hey guys,

For the past month or so, I've been having this problem. Let's say that I record a song and do resampling to save it as a .wav. Everything goes alright until I try to connect to my computer (via USB). I'll press the MENU key, then USB, then it'll do the usual "Connected." The file interface will pop up on the computer screen and I'll choose "view files/folders." The explore window with the "ROLAND" file appears (all going normal until now). When I click the "ROLAND" file, it will do one of two things:

a.) the explore window "blinks" and the "ROLAND" file appears again. I'll double click the file (for the second time), and then, instead of opening up the file (with "SMPLE, SQNCE," etc.) it will just open a blank explorer window.

b.) the "ROLAND" file opens okay. I'll go to the "SMPLE" folder and try to listen to a song, but it will do the whole "incorrect format" thing in Windows Media Player. It will also do this for files that have been in the SMPLE folder (that I've successfully listened to/copied before) for a while.

If I try to reconnect after either A or B occurs, the F-S may say "Connected," but nothing pops up on my PC. I have to restart my F-S (and sometimes my computer as well) to even get the window to pop up again after this happens. I've gone through 3 USB cables, so I know that's not the problem. Sometimes, after rebooting my F-S and/or computer 4 or 5 times, I'll try to connect to the computer (via USB as usual) and on the F-S it will stay as "Disconnected." On some occasions, after I've been trying to connect 4 or 5 times (and restarting), my computer will restart on its own when I try to connect via the USB cable.

I'm not sure what's causing this -- I'm hoping that my F-S isn't screwed up. I haven't had a chance to try this on another computer yet. Has anyone else ever had this problem? When it first started around 2 months ago, it would only do it occassionally -- now, it does this every time I try to connect via USB.

Any ideas? I'd appreciate any help that can be offered.
Thanks,
Henry
P.S. Are there any other methods I can use to connect to my computer and transfer files (besides USB)?

Henry,

A couple of things to try. . . . .

1.) First off, let us know which OS you're using and any Service Pack levels.

2.) If you have a Card installed, save the .wav to the card, then remove the card and transfer the file from the card to your PC. Of course, you'll need a card reader. They are fairly cheap and it may be worth it in this case to help with troubleshooting your problem.

Hey Bassman,

1.) How do I find this out? I'm using whatever came with my F-S61 (I haven't upgraded the OS once, nor have I used any Service Packs).

2.) I may already have a card reader. There's a slot on the front of my PC that says "SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO," and another slot that says "CF/MICRODRIVE." Could this be a built-in card reader?

By the way -- I tried connecting via USB (from my F-S) from both the card and "internal" -- neither works.

Thanks for your help with this matter -- it is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Henry

Henry,

I actually was talking about which version of Windows you were using, but you bring up a good point. You should probably upgrade your Fantom to the latest version OS. You can find out your current version by looking at Menu>System>System Information.

Or what may be easier to try initially is to perform a Factory Reset and see what happens. Back up your data first to your card using the Utility Menu on the S61. Factory Reset will clear the air and give us a clean playground as we shoot the bug. After the reset, retry the operation. Factory Reset has been known to clear up some odd bugs. . . .

Yes, it sounds like you have a card reader already on your PC. This is great. I was curious to see if you could load and play the .wav file from your card on your PC. If this works, we would probably want to focus on the Fantom as the source of the issue.
