Firmware 1.10 update failed

Firmware 1.10 update failed

16 Nov 2019, 12:49
Hey guys! Long time since I've been on here, but got the new Fantom 7 today and did the 1.10 firmware update. Seems pretty straight-forward, but after following the instructions precisely (files on root of USB drive, powered off, inserted into the MEMORY slot, powered on with WRITE button held down until "preparing for update" message). I got the Update (board1) End message and then, while leaving the power on as instructed, removed the USB drive and inserted it into External Device 1. At this point nothing further happens and the board continues to display the Update (board1) End message and in the middle of the screen it says Insert Memorty to External (board2) and just sits there. After talking with Sweetwter tech support, they had me power down and repeat this entire process using first External Device 2, which did the same thing. So it appears despite following Roland's online instructions, my brand-new board is bricked. Any ideas what else I could try?

It is certainly under Sweetwater's awesome 2-year protection at this point in time ... so I think it's time to get it replaced.

Electronic musical instruments have an "infant failure" rate of about 2-5% worldwide, about the same as laptops. By way of comparison, video game consoles have a infant failure rate between 3% and 10%.

Roland is certified (so I'm told) at about 1%.

You are now in the 1%.

You should start in external device 1 then move to 2 or 3. Based on your description here it sounds like in both cases you ended in external device 1, is that correct?

Wasn’t there also a button you had to press once you re-plugged it back in?

Another possibility is that the download was corrupt or your usb thumb drive is at fault, always test the cheaper options first.

Re-download, if you’re on OSX you may need to clear their quarantine that they set on every single zip https://www.cnet.com/news/workarounds-for-quarantine-bug-in-os-x-lion/ before you unzip. Or just make sure your antivirus is inactive as that can sometimes cause problems,

Place the contents of the zip at root level remember, not the folder. The file structure is probably important.

If that fails, try a different thumb drive.

If that fails then call Sweetwater and see if they can replace.

This page
https://www.roland.com/us/support/by_product/fantom_7/updates_drivers/90a81331-f37f-4ef1-bfaf-884d6e442f74/
says:
"Update Procedure
1. Connect the USB Memory to the USB MEMORY port".

According to the page mentioned above:
"3. After confirming that the message "Update (board1) End..." has been displayed, detach the USB flash memory without turning off the power.
* Do not turn off the power.
4. Connect the USB flash memory to any one of the EXT DEVICE jacks (1, 2, or 3).
The message "Running Update..." appears at the bottom of the display, and the update starts again.
* The update requires about 5 minutes.
5. After confirming that the message "Update (board2) End..." has been displayed, turn off the power.
Detach the USB Memory from the FANTOM-6 / FANTOM-7 / FANTOM-8.

This completes the update operation. The new system program runs at the next startup".

So, what button are you talking about?
Or are we not reading the same text?

I had the same issue and fear - my board 1 updated but it wouldn't recognise the USB stick on board 2.

It was because I was using a microSD card in an adaptor thing which I always use as it's small, but that must act like a hub and board 2 didn't like it (?). When it was still powered up and waiting I found a 'proper' USB stick, put the files on that and thankfully it got recognised and worked.

So board 1 is more compatible with USB sticks then board 2 - terrible engineering in my opinion! And such a strange thing to have to do anyway, a double procedure :/

See this if it helps - https://www.facebook.com/groups/rolandfantomplatform/permalink/500869273848523/

As it happens I didn't reformat the drive (I use it all the time on my FAs, Octapads etc. as is) and it wasn't empty - doesn't seem to be a necessity, more a precaution, so maybe also try a stick that hasn't been formatted in the Fantom?

I had the same issue, I believe it was because I was too quick moving the usb stick...
Essentially, the" Update (board1) End" message appears as if the update part 1 in complete.. however Do Nothing, this message will change after a few seconds and show updating of the memory, then the "Update (board1) End message will appear again.
Now you can move the usb stick and the part 2 update will begin.

The part 1 update info is most misleading however after 2 times of being too quick - I was 3rd time luck.
I hope you have the same good fortune.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. Thankfully Sweetwater shipped a new one to me and I'm now updated and up and running. Really liking this board so far!

I was scared update going to fail and screw up everything but I followed the instructions and it worked with no problem.
Shortly, it was a "wheeeewww" moment!

I wonder why large companies like Roland make us to jump hurdles to correct their mistakes. Can't they make this update crap a little simpler.
Download, Unzip, put it in 1 then move it to 2, reboot... all with no guarantee to work etc.
Weird!

The problem is that I returned my Fantom 6 and awaiting Fantom 7 to arrive in 2 days. I may have to go thru all over again!

Mine is also stuck when I try 2nd usb slot.

I now cannot format a usb stick with a fantom so need to try with a computer, what disk format is it?

I don't know, but Roland requieres to format the USB stick in the Fantom...
Give me a second, unmount it and place it in my laptop to see the format...

You say "...It was because I was using a microSD card in an adaptor thing which I always use as it's small, ..."

Check SanDisk Ultra Fit., it is the one I use, cannot be any smaller and the fit is so good nobody notice... It is USB 3.1 and comes with up to 512 GB.

I have a Fantom 07, so this may or may not work for the Fantoms that are not the '0' series, but here's what I did.

I was stuck at the Update (Board 1) End message and couldn't get passed it. I found I had a USB drive formatted as Fat32. When I used FAT, I was able to get passed this. To set this up with Windows, do this (Sorry, I don't own or know Macs):
  • Backup any data you want to save off your USB
  • With Disk Management delete all partitions until you have one unallocated volume
    • might be called Disk Manager on older systems
  • Right click and create a New Simple Volume
  • I made mime 400 MB as that was just larger than the total of the file sizes
  • Assign any drive letter (if it was D before, it might be E now, that's fine)
  • Format your USB as FAT - not Fat32 or NTFS.
  • Copy the data from the zip file to the drive
FYI, after being stuck at the 'Update (Board 1) End' message, I was able to start the whole process over including powering off the keyboard, holding down the write button and starting the entire set of instructions over without issue.
