JD-08 Issues

I got my JD-08 the other day and was going through the sounds and I noticed a few issues

Presets B21-B35 have no sound, according to Roland online manual, there are sounds there and when you change from B21-B22, the lights on the panel change as if the presets are there, but no sound.

Second thing, when you go to a blank preset, say C11, press a key on the keyboard and no waveform sound at all, change the waveform and still nothing.

I did the Firmware update v1.02 and a factory reset, still nothing. I contacted Sweetwater tech support and they knew nothing, I had more info about this synth than they did. They were going to reach out to Roland. I reached out to Roland as well, waiting for a response back.

Anyone with a JD-08 having issues?

I think we are all beta testers for Roland with the JD-08...probably another firmware update in the near future

I just took my 08 out of the box, put in batteries and tried the presets you described. I have none of the problems you mentioned.

Right out of the box:

- Line output has a HI frequency noise. Listen mp3 link.
The noise only happen when the USB is connect (for power only)
I tried with three different cables (connected direct to the Mac).1`

- Phone out is Fine
- Driver Installation went OK and Midi and Audio thru USB-C was recognized by the computer (MAC OS 14 Mojave).
- Update to v.102 (it came with 1.01) went ok too (after a few issues, I realised that I have to use the computer USB, not thru a hub!!)
- Can't receive Midi from USB (it shows up but not control from master keyboard).

Calling Roland Support first thing tomorrow morning.

Just received mine. Missing patches and the driver bricked my Mac Pro running Mojave.

That noise is the dreaded, USB ground loop issue. It seems Roland still hasn't fixed this and I hoped they would, switching over to the he USB-C port. Most, if not all the previous Boutique exhibit this noise, too. At least mine do. TR-09, SH-01A and TR-06. You have to change the power source away from the computer. Plug it into a phone adapter, on a separate circuit and the noise will be gone, but then you will lose the ability to communicate through your computer with it. Lovely eh?

The more issues are logged, they will be forced to address them.

I got an email response after 5 days, they had my issue incorrect, so I sent a video showing the missing patches and no waveform on blank presets.

That was 4 days ago.

Their support is slow.

There are USB power/data splitters that can help, like the ones Arturia ships the Beatstep Pro or Keystep Pro with.

Or off-the-shelf ground loop isolators:

While this is true, this a cumbersome workaround, that costs the end user more money and adds to additional cables. I wish these things would be fixed at the product level, or have Roland supply the splitter/isolator.

Thanks for the video!

I see you are using the USB for power, Midi for control and mini plug for analog audio.

How did you get rid of the mid/low grounding loop interference that a lot of people are having? Did you ever had that problem?

This is most strange. Wow. I see no reason for the issue happening, or why the workaround works, but you shown it all is, the way you say it is.

Please let us know, what you find out, from Roland. Personally, I would have just sent the unit back, for a replacement. Something is definitely up and I wouldn't want to deal with that, for the money spent.

Like the above poster mentioned, no ground loop noise. Lucky you. How not?

Update:

Received 2nd unit from retailer to replace first unit.

2nd unit has all of the same issues as the first unit.

4 brand new audio cables - all work with patches A11-88 and B11-18, doesnt work on B21-35. The cables work with the JU-06a with no issues. Internal speaker works for all patches.

Scoured the manual and even downloaded the JD-800 manual to see if there was something in there that the JD-08 manual is missing. I cant find anything.

The only thing that I can come up with is that there is an audio routing issue (software). I dont use audio or midi through USB but I may try it to see if all the patches work through USB. Not really sure how to set that up but will work on it this weekend.

It's frustrating that Roland support has been piss poor. Their latest idea was to send in and have a "master technician" look it over. I think I'll wait for another firmware update before we do that.

Looks like it is a MIDI setup issue then. Are those patches single, dual or layer?

I seem to recall the JD/JX-08 are responding by default to MIDI channels 1, 2 and 3 depending on the mode or part selected.

Have you tried switching the JD-08 to Part B? Hold the Note button then select B on the Tones on the left (of A,B,C,D). The JD-08 has two parts, and defaults to playing part A most of the time. It could be those are part B patches. Just a suggestion.

Not a midi setting, it is an audio routing issue to the output jack. If you pull the jack out and use the internal speaker, everything works.
