I cannot get 3.0 loaded

Taken from my comment to Ed on YouTube Fantom 3.0 update tutorial:

Hello Ed,
I am stuck at insert memory to usb (board 1) prompt.
I have done all the steps, tried two (if not three) different perfectly fine thumb drives.
Still, the same spinning forward slash followed by the non-flashing text cursor
Help of you can please…not a newbie by any stretch

What am I doing wrong?

First place to plug your stick to is USB MEMORY.
Yes, USB MEMORY, not EXT DEVICE.
At a later stage you move it from USB MEMORY to any of the three slots for EXT DEVICE.

So....Stick into USB MEMORY.

Then hold WRITE and turn Fantom ON.

Hold WRITE until "preparing for update..." appears.

Wait till said to move device to another slot and make sure 100% is shown on first line, then connect it to EXT DEVICE 1 or 2 or 3.

Roland says it takes about five minutes.

Yeppers, I have repeatedly gone through the steps as you’ve illustrated. Done it so many times that I’m blue in the face. I’ve installed all previous updates of the Fantom without hiccups.
I’ve escalated this bewilderment to Roland Zendesk and am awaiting their response now.

Have you check that stick to be FAT32 ?

I gotta go over that consideration again. I’ve done both the Fantom on-board formatting as well as formatting via disk utility in MacOS. I’m gonna try that procedure once again when I get home today.

Ciao!

Two tips: a) Always format your USB pendrive from fantom (and do safe eject)
b) Pendrive size matters.... FAT32 has a upper limit to 32GB. Small USB drive units from 4 to 16GB works well.

The only limitations I know of arising from using FAT32 are a maximum total capacity of 2TB (the limit accepted by smart TVs when using a USB drive) and a maximum size of 4GB per file.

I am using a SanDisk UltraFit 256 GB drive (232 GB available after 256/1.024^4 (bytes to kilobytes to megabytes to gigabytes) with my Fantom 8, formatted to FAT32 and its performance is astounding.

All things in my Fantom before ver 3.0 were stored in a 128 GB SanDisk UltraFit, directly used by the keyboard with no issues at all along two years of service.

Using this huge capacity allows performing lots of security copies, granting everything can be retrieved anytime.

I am at this point and nothing happens now…been this way for an hour, tried different usb thumb drives all formatted (and reformatted) w/FAT32.

The screen is asking you to remove the USB drive and connect it to any EXT DEVICE SLOT (1 or 2 or 3).

As soon as you do that the installation will continue.

It didn’t follow through like that. That foto I posted is where it had been hung up on. I checked that thumb drive out and it appears that it crapped out after that first phase of the update. Now neither of my computers will recognized the thumb drive; I cannot reformat it or anything.

I turned off the Fantom and now have this:

No response of any of the physical controls now. I put another FAT32 formatted drive in and redo the turn on with write button pressed and back to square one

Is there a button combination pressed upon power on that will clean the machine to start fresh…or is there an archive of previous updates that I could fall back on?

Hey all who are concerned and have stuck by me through this…I am saved by my daughters spare usb thumb drive!!!!! Talk about a nerve wracking experience.

Valuable lesson learned: NEVER, NEVER try to do an update going into the weekend with hardcore music production in mind.

This debacle could’ve blown up my weekend & near future no doubt about it. This took me back, oh, about 25 years when I erased all the work I had saved on my Korg 01/Wfd with the wrong push of a button (cause back then there were no idiot proofed save/load dialog…I saved a blank start up memory verse loading from disk…like I said, no idiot proof back then. ;p…remember how volatile on board memory was back then?)

My utmost thanks for those who have written and were patient with my misfortune. Salud

Yes, FGM, you're right. 2TB maximum partition size. ( me quedé en el tiempo), but depends of a cluster size (how many disk blocks are grouped as file allocation unit). FAT32 is a filesystem type know by their inefficiencies.
