XV5080 on the Jupiter X

XV5080 on the Jupiter X

So I'm a rompler guy and mostly use acoustic/orchestral instruments when playing a keyboard (plus some mono synth leads) and after moving, I had to leave behind my Juno Gi and JV1080. Now I'm looking to buy a new keyboard and I remember back when Roland announced the Jupiter 80 that it looked badass but sadly there was no 61 key version available. Now that the Jupiter X is out I've been taking a look and although its mostly synth sounds and functionalities, it seems to include a XV-5080.

Understandably its very difficult to find info on the XV for the Jupiter X as most people just go crazy with the Juno/Jupiter/SH stuff. But I'm wondering, is it a full XV 5080 thats included in the JupiterX in terms of funcionality? can I edit the XV patches just like I could on an actual XV module (but with all the badass real knobs/faders) and save them in the user bank? I guess most of what Id tweak would consist of attack/decay/release,etc.

Also, would that mean I can make patches that mix both jupiter and XV sounds ?

I'm wondering whether I should just save some money and buy an actual (used) XV-5080 + midi controller (or maybe an Integra7?) but I would also like to delve a bit into the synth part of keyboards for once.

well for info, watched a video of someone editing some XV patches and seems to have everything I need. Went ahead and ordered it. I'm used to editing things through a small simple screen like the JV1080's, but this one is even tinier. But at least there's the PC editor.

Make sure you update the synth to firmware 1.50, since it makes it a little more usable if you have muscle memory from the JV.
Be preprared to a new naming scheme though: Performances are now called Scenes, Patches are called Tones, and Tones are called Partials...
And the editor is a great help, as you will find out. You'll need an account on Roland Cloud to download it though.

If you don't need more than a few macro edits, it should be okay, and you'll have the pseudo-analog models for bass duties.

Bear in mind it's not a 100% XV-5080, just an approximation, like the other "models". Everything runs on the underlying so-called "ZEN-Core" engine, which is just a glorified software 4 tone JV/XV/Fantom engine with PCM/VA OSC, modeled filters, more modulations and classic MFX (e.g. Juno chorus).
The Jupiter is no substitute for a real 5080 in multi-timbral use, since it has only 4 parts, no extra audio outputs (unless you're using the USB audio driver), no SRX/SR-JV80 boards, no sample playback. The UI is not as straightforward as the original rack devices, and by a long shot.

There are waveforms expansions binaries available:
https://soundcloud.com/rolandcom/sets/zen-core-wave-expansions
But you only got a licence to use them, because everything you'll download from the Roland Cloud Manager will be tied to your user account.
No resale value if you abide by the Roland Cloud EULA.

Hope you'll enjoy the synth anyway.

thanks for the reply. Yes, after further reading, it seems the XV5080 in it is a recreation using their latest marketed engine. I'm, however, good with that, it sounds like it could be a more modern approach and the XV limitations are (in my use case) offset by the synth stuff and hardware controls that the rest of the keyboard offers.

I'm still not entirely clear on the expansions. I see there's an orchestral expansion, would that be the equivalent of the orchestral SRX for the JV ? I remember I'd use the orchestral sounds for my strings/harpsichord patches. Also, I think I read somewhere that the JP-X can only hold two expansions at a time ?

I believe the EXZ are SRX based indeed.
You won't be able to use the extra drumkits on the Jupiter-X/m, but waveforms would be available for custom Tones.

Correct, it has little memory for exz file, depending on their size. No one has crack open the synth yet to see if there is the speculated SD-card for storage that could be replaced (the Integra had one, so does the Fantom). Not to mention the licencing problem.

Wow there's a lot of complaints from very passionate people on the lengthy gearspace thread. It also made me realize something I hadn't stopped to think about before: there's a big difference between electronic music synth users and keyboard players.

It took me quite a bit of reading on that thread to realize that I'm just a keyboard player and, as such, so many of the complaints don't really bother me at all.

The JPX sounds like a dream to me in theory and the only I'd wish is for it to be more compact and have a better screen, doesn't even have to be that big, just longer, at least, like the JV/XVs. I've always wanted to try a V Synth, but I've always felt it's too much on the synth side for me. Does it have any acoustic/orchestral instrument patches? This is why I value the XV in the JPX.

Anyway, FedEx says my JPX arrives tomorrow so we'll see.

OK so FedEx did its thing and the keyboard arrived 2 days late but I've finally received it, updated it to firmware 1.5 and I've been learning and enjoying it a lot. HOWEVER I do need help at the moment.

When compared to my JV1080, it seems sound management consists of:
- Scenes (JV Performances)
- 1 Scene -> 4 Parts/Tones + a 5th percussion part/tone (JV Patches)
- 1 Part/Tone -> 4 Partials (JV Tones)

Now here's the issue:

Let's take a XV5080 part(patch), for example XV011 - West Coast. I can assign West Coast as 1 part of a Scene.
Now West Coast has 4 partials, I can edit/mute them using the OSC/MIXER controls which is great. BUT, how do I change the "voices" ?
If you isolate each OSC using the OSC MIXER, you can distinctly hear 4 different voices:

1. A piano OSC
2. EP OSC
3. Strings OSC
4. A fourth OSC I'm not entirely sure about (beside the point)

How can I change a single OSC to something else, say, a harpsichord ?

I've been going through the 1.5 manual which has been very clear so far, but It doesnt seem to mention how to do this.

EDIT:

So I did some googling around and found the solution on a JupiterXpert post:

https://jupiterxpert.com/zen-core-partials-tutorial/

He explains how to change it here:
– In TONE EDIT, you can quickly navigate to and change the PCM Waveform. From the top of the menu, hold SHIFT and turn Knob 1 three clicks. As a result, you’ll be on WAV GR TYPE with the waveform selections (Left and Right) directly below that.
WAV GR TYPE was the key. Now the sad thing is that its extremely difficult to navigate the waveforms one by one, though definitely not a dealbreaker for me. I wonder if there's anyway to navigate through a list or through categories

Don't try to learn the synth through your JV experience, use the software editor.

The hardware user interface is taylored at the ABM ("analog") models, it's not very convenient for the ZEN-Core part of the engine, which is JV/XV on steroids.
If you're after the ROMpler sounds, you may be interested in the JD-800 expansion, which is still exclusive to the Jupiters at the moment (and a tad expensive for what it is). It has the classic Palette mode where you can view and edit a parameter for the 4 partials (JV tones) at once.
