Porblems with Cloud Manager on MacOS

21 Jul 2020, 09:12
Hi!

I have nothing but troubles with the Roland Cloud on my Macbook. Before the Cloud Manager was introduced, it was already annoying, because I had to login again, every time I opened any Roland instrument.

But now with the Cloud Manager, I am not even able to login anymore. The problem is, that the manager window is empty when I open it from the menu. A pop up windows is opening up, but it is completely empty. There is no option to enter anything.

I have already de and reinstalled the manger several times, nothing helps.

I am running 10.15.5 on a 2020 Macbook Pro.

Thanks for any help,
Pony

Issues with the RCM app can be monitored via Apples Activity Monitor Application. You can monitor CPU usage and Networking to determine if the App is working or is in a disabled/crashed state which would have red text after its process name.

Just as a test temporarily disable any anti-virus and the OSX Firewall.

Open Apples Activity Monitor
Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app
From the CPU tab on the Activity Monitor.app processes are named

If the 'Roland Cloud Manager' process is crashed or highlights with red text: [attachment: Screenshot 2020-08-02 at 13.13.29.png] 1) Double click the process name and choose quit.
2) Choose force quit when asked.
3) Reboot the machine.
4) Allow RCM to start up automatically it takes about 2mins on my machine. You can check that it's starting by tapping the OSX main menu Roland icon 'where the OSX clock is'. When starting it will say Starting Please wait. After X minutes you should see the Open App button appear on that same menu.
5) Go back and check the OX Activity Monitor app to see if there is an activity for the RCM app both CPU tab and Networking tab.

What I found:

Downloading random synths crashes the app. It's best to choose a Series from the RCM app menu (tap the order by "Series" Menu Button)and choose a Series (example) Anthology and just install the Anthology software in logical order using the auto Queuing system. then move onto another Series. At the end of each download process, The process will ask for the OS admin password via a popup to install the Synth.

Another issue I noticed:
There appears to be some sort of disconnect with the OSX menu roland icon service and the RCM app browser running.
On occasion, the RCM app/browser will be open but the OSX menu Icon will show the Open App Blue button.
If this is the case it appears installs just fail to install or do anything.

Solution: close the current window, go back to the OSX menu Roland icon and click the blue button "Open App"

Patients are required and the issues faced here are beyond ridiculous. I still have issues but running through the steps above has helped me get the service back online and back to installing the massive library.

My Opinion on RCM is that it's poorly developed and does not have sufficient service redundancy and recovery built into its design. For a subscription-based service, the last thing Roland should have is a buggy unreliable App Manager.

*** Edit ***
  • After 3 days of downloading the RCM app crashed 12 times having to reinstall some Series.
    All synths installed
Some synths are very preset lite.
Intial basic testing on synths they all sound great massive selection
SRX Series is crashing Logic Pro X 10.5.1 (maybe starting thread for this)
Some pain in the jacksie! F*** Y** Rol***

I just downloaded and installed last version of RCM, installed the Zentology synth and then went to Logic Pro X, created a software instrument, then choose AU Instruments -> Roland -> Zentology and an error came up complaining about RCM servers and authenication, so the VST loaded but on demo mode. I then went into the VST Menu -> Authentication and put again my RC credentials but the error remains. I am on OSX Catalina.

Hey, vespina! Sorry that you're having trouble with your Roland Cloud as well. Sometimes we see plugins have trouble loading if the files are installed in a custom location. We recommend installing into them plug-ins into their normal location and reloading your Roland Cloud Manager. If the problem persists, please contact us at http://www.rolandcloud.com/support for further assistance.

I installed everything in the default location. Restarting RCM made no diferrence, neither a computer restart.

Even after the update, the Cloud Manager is still giving issues, like not storing login info, requesting login randomly and, crashing intermittently preventing instruments loading. Every other Manager is solid and works transparently from Waves to Arturia to iZotope. Why is it that Roland cannot fix these issues? When I open the DAW its creativity time it shouldn't be, troubleshoot Roland Software issues time!

After much frustration, I have decided to cancel my subscription with Roland as I feel the issues around synths crashing and the ridiculous App Manager is too serious to ignore. Opening a project is now hit and miss with crashes when using Roland synths some won't open because of the Roland synths instantly crashing. Completly interrupts the creative process. Disappointed with the products from day one I just can't get the benefit of the synths so why pay for it and I won't be recommending. 1-star review!

Hi, KernelEventAgent! Brian from Roland Cloud here. Sorry that you've been dealing with some crashes. That can definitely be frustrating, and that is not how we would like the program to operate. While we don't currently have a password save feature, we have it on our list of feature requests, and we are aware of that concern. Our most common recommendation to keep Roland Cloud Manager running smoothly is simple; make sure you're connected to the internet, and open RCM once a week. This will keep all of the instruments authorized, and it won't ask again for another seven days. You won't be required to be connected around the clock, just once a week when you're authorizing. If you notice the Cloud asking for authorizations more than that, it would be out of the ordinary, in which case, we are always available to help through the Contact Us link at: http://www.rolandcloud.com/support We understand if you'd like to go, but the door is always open, and we're always available to assist. Thanks!

There was a message in Roland Cloud Manager back in October about not updating to macOS Big Sur.

Have the compatibility issues been resolved yet?

Hi, Richard! Brian from Roland Cloud here. Great question. We are still in the testing phase with Big Sur. For now, we are cautioning against using Roland Cloud with Big Sur until we complete testing. We will issue a statement when testing is complete. Thanks!
