Sine Wave LFO - Start at top of sine

Sine Wave LFO - Start at top of sine

31 Jul 2018, 19:43
I've recently had need for a sound that pulses for volume and slowly sweeps the filter cutoff frequency up and down. I chose to use LFO1 to modulate the TVA using a square wave and LFO1 to modulate the filter cutoff using a sine wave. Overall, I've got the sound I'm looking for, however I would like it if I could start the modulation of the filter at the 'top' of the sine save instead of the middle so that it starts at the top of the filter and sweeps down all the way. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Unfortunately, Roland does not let you change the phase of the LFO waveforms.

The most straightforward workaround is to create a Step LFO waveform. Change the LFO waveform to "STEP". Draw your sine wave across the 16 steps of the Step LFO. And make sure that "LFO Step Type" is "TYPE2" to smooth the waveform.

Another workaround is to use an envelope and Matrix Control to temporarily speed up the LFO Rate. The idea is to make the LFO so fast (at the start) that you do not hear the opening rise of the sine wave. It is more complicated and does not work if the LFO is tempo-synced.

There is another way..
Grab the PC editor
LFO2 (I assume your LFO1 for the TVF is a typo)
Wave =SIN, offset =0, Key sync =ON
Set your Rate and use the Delay to start at the first top of the SIN wave.
Adjust the TVF Amount (+40) to get your sound back again.

TVF...
Set L0 to 127 and all the other L's to 0
Set T's to 0 and adjust T1 to cover the delay in the LFO start - try to match it so the descending sweep is carried on by the LFO2.
Adjust the Cutoff and TVF Env Depth to suit

You can still use the rest of TVF envelope by setting L2 to max and T2 is now your ATTACK, T3 is the DECAY, L3 is the SUSTAIN and T4 is the RELEASE.

You can make the starting downward filter sweep longer by increasing T1 and adjusting the LFO2 delay to start on the downward slope of a later SIN wave.

Hope this helps

Thanks to all who replied. I'm going to give the step approach the first try. I suspect it will accomplish what I'm looking for.
