Can anybody help please?

Hi,

I just bought Roland FA-06, and very happy with it. But, i am having problem with playing my own songs.

Whenever i load songs i have created, then play them, the instruments i have already assigned for each tracks are gone. Sorry for my english, i will try to give an example :
I created SUMMERTIME song, and i have assigned :
- Track 1 = Acoustic Piano
- Track 2 - Acoustic Bass
- Track 10 = Power Session (drum)

After i saved the song, then i tried to load this SUMMERTIME song, what happens is :
- Track 1 = Metal Pad
- Track 2 = Full Grand 1
- Track 10 = Power Session (drum)
I noticed this is the instrument tracks of FA PREVIEW

Strangely, if I load the 4 preset songs, before the songs start, the instruments in each tracks which by default is FA PREVIEW instrument tracks will change into the right instruments for the preset songs.

Could anybody help me with this please? Thank you

Hi Paulus.

You must save your instrument choices as a studio set, and then save your song. This allows you the ability to use a single sound arrangement for multiple songs if you wish. There are 512 studio set USER slots available.

You have to save your sounds in a studio set.

When you record a song, although you can select sounds per track, the song loads up the studio set associated with it.

So the workflow is this...

1. In sequencer (song) mode, select which sounds you want on each track.

2. Now press the write button and select Save Studio Set. Give it a unique name and select where you want it to go

3. Go back to the sequencer and play your track. Once you're happy with it press Write

4. Now select save Song - give it a name and a slot for it.

Now you will have saved the notes in the song and also which studio set it uses.

In your current situation (ie you have the notes recorded) do this...

1. Re-select the sounds you actually want

2. Save it as a studio set

3. Now save the song

Done :)

In the Roland Fantom series workstations, any changes to the Studio Set (Performance) are saved with the Song.

The FA-06/08 manual implies that the FA also saves all edits. On P.74 it states:

"In addition to the performance data, a song also contains
information about the studio set. This means that the song
playback is affected if you edit the studio set or the tones that
are used by the song".

Having to create, name, and then save a specific studio set for each song is tedious, and a step backwards in the evolution of the workflow, and I hope it will be addressed in an update.

Yes they changed the system design, I also trapped into this coming from an Fantom X.
Even the people who created the demo songs wanted to make shure their song points to the right studio set and inserted the studio set as sysex into tra ck 1 of the song...

But in the end it is one more WRITE fo me.

Roland really needs to do something about this issue (and a couple of others).

I have nearly 300 songs that I have created over the years with Roland workstations (XP-series, Fantom S,X,& G) that I would like to move over to the FA. The work flow should be:

1. Import SMF.

2. Choose new patches, set levels, effects, etc.

3. Name song.

4. Save.

The easiest transition occurred when I moved a bunch of sequences from the XP-60 to the Fantom X, because the X accepted the SVQ files from the XP.
However, the Fantom G didn't accept previous Roland SVQs, so one had to convert all files to SMFs first. With so many songs to move over, I just need the process to be as painless as possible.

Yes from this point of view it would be a little help. Because the systems vary in their sound architecture Roland may be unable to assure any easy song import via SVQ.
Some song converting between XV and Fantom X was supported by Roland with the EXP boards CD Rom. But XV and FX are not far away from its sound engine.

I have manually converted about 25 songs for my band's show via SMF export from Fantom X to FA. The final results on the FA are very far away (soundwise) from FX (in my and bands opinion much better).
Totally different sample track architecture, multiple MFX, only two instead of four EXP... I think it is a huge challenge for a programmer to write a converter which will produce acceptable results.

However any convert/import tool to reduce workload would be helpful. I see your point.
