Uploading JP80 sounds into the JP50

Uploading JP80 sounds into the JP50

24 Feb 2014, 07:57
Hi

I have a JP80 for gigging and have created loads of live custom live sets and registrations, however, I am thinking of changing to a JP50 purely on the basis of the weight of the keyboard. As a gigging musician I find it way too heavy ( and yes, I knew the weight of it before I purchased :) )

Has anyone transferred custom sounds from a JP80 ? What happens to the Upper and Lower livesets after they have been uploaded onto the JP50 ?

Thanks for reading

The exported file format (SVD) of the JP80 and the JP50 is practically identical. Basically the JP50 uses the JP80 format with a different identifier (and omitting some sections). I would be surprised if the JP50 can not open JP80 files, but I have not seen anyone on this forum confirm it. It is easy to test for any JP50 owner. Just download a JP80 file (on Axial or Repository of Sound) and attempt to import (not restore!) on a JP50.

The JP50 uses only the upper live set in an SVD and ignores the lower. It also ignores any registrations beyond the first 128 in an SVD.

If the JP50 is unable to open JP80 files then it is probably not much work to convert the file to become compatible due to the minor differences. I'm working on a tool for those kinds of needs. ;)

I just tried importing the "TL-Collection2", "Harpelis", and "Jarre" sound sets from the JP-80 Repository into the JP-50. All of the Tones and LiveSets imported and played fined, but the JP-50 would not recognize/import the JP-80 Registrations. This makes sense. The Tones and LiveSets have the same architecture, no matter which machine they are from, but the architecture of the Regs is different - the JP-80 allowing two LiveSets while the JP-50 allows only one LiveSet per Reg. Attempts to import a JP-80 Reg into the JP-50 returns an "EMPTY" message, meaning there are no JP-50 compatible Regs in the selected .SVD file. The next question is: will the JP-80 import a JP-50 Reg ? Somehow, I feel it would - just populate the one LiveSet and leave the other blank, whereas going the other way, the JP-50 has nowhere to populate the second LiveSet.

So, JP-50 owners should be able to take part in the Repository almost as much as JP-80 owners. They will just have to build their own Regs by hand once the Tones and LiveSets are installed on the JP-50. If a JP-80 owner would try importing one or the JP-50 Regs from the original factory sound set or the Legends sound set that I provided some months ago, we would know if the JP-80 can import a JP-50 Reg.

Ted

Interesting!

So I went to axial and downloaded the JP-50 synth legends.

I then completely 'blanked' my JP-80 so that there would be space for the whole collection.

First I tried restore - that failed with a 'read error'.

I then did an import. My result confirmed tnicoson's above in that the registrations were ignored. However, the livesets and tones loaded up and played perfectly.

Nice discoveries!

Since the registration format is the same in the SVD I wonder why the Jupiters won't read each others registrations. When I find time I will compare the registration data in a sound set released for both synths on Axial. If there is no difference it means the synths just ignore the registrations, probably based on the header. If so, modifying the header should allow opening the registrations.

Many thanks for all your replies .. makes interesting reading. I have held off buying a JP50 for now to see how the FA-06 plays but I suspect the keybed will not be as good as the JP50.

I have now ordered my JP50 and will be sad to see my JP80 go - I have ensured that all the sounds I wish to import into the JP50 are in the Upper Live set - hopefully the JP50 will put my custom Live Sets in the same location :)

Let us know if it doesn't work. We can probably figure out something.

Have received my JP50 and I imported sounds from my JP80 without any problems - touched the screen a few times though thinking it was touchscreen :)

Keybed is very good ( I used to have a MOX6 ) but I must admit the JP80 keybed appears to feel slightly better unless its my imagination

Now to sell the Jp80 :(

Congrats on the '50, Kevin. Looks like you probably won't get much sleep the rest of the weekend. Aside from bruising your fingertips tap, tap, tapping on a non-touch screen, I am wondering how many times you are going to go looking for that second LiveSet, or wonder why the drums and bass aren't both playing together in the "Lower".

Sorry the '80 has to go, but I think your lower back muscles will thank you in their own way !

Best wishes !

Ted
