Reverb difference between supernatural and pcm

Reverb difference between supernatural and pcm

24 Jul 2013, 17:59
Hi,

While checking out patches, I noticed the reverb level of supernatural patches is lower than the reverb level of pcm patches. When setting rev level and rev amount at 127, pcm sounds real 'wet' but the sn sounds are abt half as wet.

Did you guys notice that too or is it something with my Integra?

Thanks

Thanks.. So I now know it's not something which is wrong with my Integra7. However, I think it's strange, don't you?

I have the same problem. I've worked on some symphonic orchestra pieces using SRX 06, 04 and 10 sounds. Whenever I try to add supernatural voices, they sound too dry and don't mix well. Somebody on Youtube even commented everything except the contrabass sounded good - the contrabass was the only SN sound used, and the reason it wasn't convincing was that it sounded like recorded in a dry jazz setting in contrast to the reverb of the other symphonic sounds.

I addressed this to RolandCE, hopefully they can correct this in firmware.

In the meantime, to make it work in a mix, the setting of the reverb itself should be set to max 127. Then the individual parts can be leveled accordingly, obviously, the SN voices will get higher send levels than other sound...

I wonder if it's just because the PCM sounds in general are "wetter" (i.e., more drenched in reverb in their original samplings, where as the SN modeling is 'dry'), so when you crank up the reverb is just makes 'wet' PCM sounds 'wetter' and 'dry' SN sounds sort of wet?

I do think the single reverb/chorus bus is one of the weakest features of the Integra. Sometimes you really do want different kinds of reverbs for different sounds, rather than just one type for everything.

Since I only use my Integra for home-based recording I generally leave the Integra reverb off or low as possible and use the much better reverb effects in DAW if I need them.

PCM voices are not wetter. Take a piano from an SRX, and set reverb level to 0, you'll hear how dry it is. Set it to 60 and you'll get the same amount of reverb compared to a setting of 127 on a SN piano.

I'll test if this also applies to chorus settings.

Well, it also applies to chorus but with a lesser degree:

I tested the chorus level using a delay for the chorus type. I sampled the experiment so I could check the delay level and compare that with the original input. For a SN voice, the 1st delay has a level of 90% of the original voice. That's reasonable.. For a PCM voice the output of the 1st delay is 110 % of the original.

For reverb, a level of 127 gives about the same amount as reverb as 60 for pcm voices.

SN SYNTH voices have no problem, the have the same levels as PCM voices.

Roland CE confirm that they've checked it and the problem has been noticed. The appropriate person will be informed.

.. hoping for the best ..

Hi again,

I've been emailing and calling with Roland CE about this integra-7 reverb problem. It may help if more Integra owners address this problem at their Roland support office. That way, it's not a single use complaint, but a structural problem with the Integra-7. Roland Japan would probably address the issue with more urge.

Thanks.

Yeah, this is an OLD thread, but it's new to me. :-)

Does anybody know of Roland addressed this via firmware at some point. I didn't see it mentioned in the 1.21 firmware notes. Maybe they fixed it without mentioning it?
