Can Fantom G receive sysex bulk dump data?

Can Fantom G receive sysex bulk dump data?

3 Mar 2013, 17:40
Hi,

Today I set up the Fantom to receive a memory dump from another instrument. I created a phrase on the Fantom to initiate the dump on the other instrument while recording. Whatever I try, no data seems to be recorded.

I checked if the other instrument produced the dump by connecting it to a pc. That works, so the request-sysex is ok.

Is the Fantom not capable of receiving large amounts of sysex data? Or is there a special procedure?

Thanks

the fantom can received whatever you send it..
just load it in to your daw and press play
as long as you have your sends setup correctly it will receive them and if its fantom data
the fantom will change its settings accordingly

if however the data dump is something you want the fantom to playback at some point
then just before you press play on your daw you should already be in record mode on the fantom.

Thanks.
It's strange that I can't get it to work. The fantom records short sysex messages, but not the dumps of several Kbytes.

At one track I've setup a sysex message for the organ to send it's dump
At another track I press record. So the first track is played back to let the organ know it has to send the dump, the second track should record that. But at the end, the second track remains empty.

That same scenario work perfectly if I use the computer instead of the Fantom.

Any suggestions?

You must also ensure that receive/send sysex is enabled on the fantom
as well as prog change and bank change etc...
this can be found under system menu

All has been enabled. The fantom records regular (short) sysex messages, about 8 bytes long. But they are not dumps. I tried to record dumps from 2 other devices into the Fantom, but they all fail.

I'm out of options...

in that case
use your computer daw to record the dump then export as a midi file then transfer to the fantom via usb flash drive where you can import the midi file.

Many transmitting devices require checksums to be sent back to them in order to continue with their bulk dump. The transmitting device sends a short string of SysEx and then waits for a reply with the correct checksum. If the transmitting device doesn't receive the correct checksum, it aborts the bulk dump.

I don't think the Fantom-G's sequencer knows how to reply with a checksum.

You might be able to turn off the checksum requirement on your transmitting devices. (It's also called "handshaking.")

@Quinnx Thanks, I will try that.
@JunoJohn The dumping device has no such option, but thanks for suggesting.

Thanks to all.

Another method is to have the Fantom-G's sequencer "eavesdrop" on the SysEx "conversation" of two other devices. The other devices take care of the checksums and acknowledgements, while the FG records the Bulk Dump.

I successfully recorded a Bulk Dump using two Alpha Juno's and my FG this way.
