Fantom XR - Play/control performance from MIDI controller?

I picked up a secondhand XR earlier this year and am just now getting around to playing with performances.

Using Cubase, I can route the MIDI events from a keyboard to multiple MIDI channels on the XR and play some amazing layered sounds using the XR performance mode, and am wondering how to accomplish the same thing live using an external keyboard controller plugged directly into my XR.

Since controllers (I think) only transmit on a single MIDI channel, is it possible to use a single controller to play a performance set up with different patches on each channel?

I suppose I can set the performance parts to respond on the same channel and play multiple parts that way, but I'd also like to use the MIDI controller to control the individual sequence parts, i.e. if I'm playing six simultaneous patches on parts 1-6, I'd like to be able to do something like program the MIDI controller buttons to mute/unmute individual parts and have the MIDI controller sliders control the individual volume of each part.

Is that possible? Do the individual performance controls (mute/level/pan/reverb/chorus, etc.) for each part have separate CC assignments so that I can program the contoller's slider 1 (for example) to control part 1's level on the XR performance?

The controller keyboard would have to be able to transmit on any midi channel for that to work. Most decent new controllers can easily.
