Jupiter-80 Hate

31 May 2012, 19:03
Ok. So I've been watching Gearslutz following the JP-80 and JP-50 threads.

I just don't get the virulent hate being spewed forth.

I read the threads this evening for a while. Most seem to flow around the idea that the 80 sounds "thin" or not "rich" or only good with layers or effects. I felt myself getting more and more pissed off so I said, "Ok jerk wads, let's find out." I went to the studio to have a go at it.

I don't have a JP-8, so I turned on the nearest best thing I have, the OB-Xa. I set it up for a straight sawtooth waveform with no envelope modulation and only one oscillator (no detuning). I then went to the Jupiter, turned off all the effects, analog feel, etc. Nothing but straight sawtooth. One partial, -24 dB filter, LPF2, a hair of resonance. With a bit of added eq, I nailed the sound. Lows and highs.

Ok, great. So then I went all 8 oscillators on the Oberheim, patch A-1 (the ballsy, pseudo-Jump patch). Now back to the JP-80.

I was able to nail it to within 99.5%. Admittedly it took me about 20 minutes of tweaking the filters and playing with detuning, but the sound was totally there. All balls were there, and in some ways, it was heavier sounding. This was only 2 partials. I didn't want to embarrass the OB-Xa and turn on all 3 partials. Two partials, one tone, one layer.

Anyway, I just don't see where this all hate is coming from. Either they're auditioning the synth in 3 minutes at Sam Ash with a pair of crappy headphones and Version 1, or they can only afford a MicroKorg and have gear-envy, or are only 17 years with no reference point but their peers. Pretty much tired of defending the synth. Thin? Please.

Sorry, just on a rant I guess. There are a number of things I would like Roland to do to make the synth mo' betta, but geez people, it's a smoking machine. Maybe the OS is too "easy," and doesn't demand respect or something.

I guess my perusing GS days have come to an end. Too many morons, and a waste of time.

Scottrod,
With you, I have read the GS thread from beginning to end. I don't understand there reasoning. As yet, I have not purchased a JP-80. I continue to use my FG which is another assume keyboard. No hate here for the JP-80. In reading the latest issue of Sound On Sound (SOS), the same reviewer for the JP-80 is reviewing the new Solaris synth. They are not the same machine but the JP-80 does not come-up lacking and in many ways, IMHO, is a better purchase over the Solaris as a more all-around instrument.

Perhaps you should consider adding your comments to GS thread to bring some additional balance to their conversation. For the most part as I am not currently an owner of the JP, I have not attempted to intervene. And, I comment and ask questions here as a FG owner with an interest in having a JP at some future date.

Excellent post. I'm all about discussing the merits of gear. I'm a unrepentant gear-a-holic. However, the level of vitriol against the JP80 is just plain silly. Same goes for the Kronos bashers. I have both boards and by far they are the best 2 synths out there for my money. They compliment each other well. No disrespect untended to the Oasys owners either. If there was no Kronos I would have one. As for the Motif, Fantom, Virus, Roland V-Synth, Nord etc. all are excellent as well. I do have a Motif XS and Fantom XR. Got a Nord Lead 1, and wouldnt mind taking the Virus or V-Synth for a spin. However the JP80/Kronos combo is just pain fun.

I share your oppinions. I usually almost never read the GS-Forum. But just before, after a long 24 hour session, I've coincidentally read the last GS Jupiter forum page, where someone posted a SonicState video-review about the Jupiter-50. This video caused a wave of hate posts. The Roland guy in this video AND the questioner from SonicState are BOTH completely uninformed and ignorant about the Jupiters's synth technology and synth potential and are hereby delivering the perfect platform for ignorant haters....But who cares, I was playing the Jupiter-80 (and OASYS-88) for the last 24 hours and I am too exhausted from happiness and joy (and shortness of sleep) to care about all the irrelevant ignoramuses...

Couldn't agree more. I read those threads when the JP-80 was first announced and was stunned by the level of hatred about something no one had heard yet. GS is a waste of time. I love the way someones ill informed opinion becomes fact. According to forums the Fantom G is worst keyboard ever made by anyone in the history of keyboards ever. Which it's not. In fact it's one of the most versatile and great sounding bits of hardware I've ever used. And I bet the JP-80 sounds better. These days you can pretty much go into a shop and buy the Fantom G or Kronos or Motif XF or Jupiter-80 or a Nord and have a machine that is awesome. That's my 2 cents worth. They're ALL good. Whether each ones way of working floats your boat, is up to you.

Wow - I have never read such utter rubbish as on that GearSlutz thread.

I mean people pontificating that the JP is a workstation??!!!! C'MON!!!

And the bile exuded because of its name - C'MON!!!

No-one over there 'gets' the JP-80

I think most of the "haters" over there have never played the 50 or 80 in person. And they would have to get their parents to drive them to a Guitar Center to do so. Jealous little children!!

A wise man once said..........

" I am still shocked at the response from people though about using the Jupiter name when so far 100% of the people I've heard this comment from haven't played, heard, or even seen a Jupiter 8. They cost nearly 5000 pounds when they came out in 1981 which is the equivalent to around 10,000 pounds today, and there were only a couple of thousand made so it amazes me how there are so many so called experts on it out there? and most of those so called experts can't even play keyboards and the Jupiters have always been performance keyboards for players !! The fact is though that both the Jupiter-80 and 50 are incredible keyboards and as a player that has owned nearly every make of keyboard going, which have all had their one individual merits, The Jupiters are the best all round performance/sound creating keyboards I have ever had the pleasure of playing, and if you take a look at all the top session players and bands out at the moment, you will see that most of them are using a Jupiter and they can't all be wrong ! I think people should move on and forget the name and just see the keyboards for what they really are, Amazing/Brilliant studio/performance keyboards. The analogue modelling and editing goes far deeper than most people think. I suggest that those people that can't play a note and just want an analogue keyboard to make strange sounds should maybe just go on Ebay and buy an old Synth that has no memory and goes out of tune all the time. I had to use those keyboards back in the day and trust me, They are no fun on stage at all, You were never sure that they would play the right sound at the right time. The New Jupiters are Beasts. I am an independent session player and demonstrator and can honestly say with hand on heart that they are the best keyboards I have ever owned for the creation of sounds and for use on stage. You won't be sorry if your lucky enough to get one !! "

I couldn't have said it any better than that .

It must be a passive aggressive thing. The same folks crapping on the Jupiter are in other threads praising the GAIA. The JP50 OP says GAIA was his "first synth". This tells you where they are truly coming from. Zero hands on experience - everything they *think* they know they learned from youtube.

Take it for what its' worth.

in fact, the jupiter 80/50 series are for real keyboard players.

These are not synth for somebody who buy synths just to have a 10 machines collection to put and look more than to play..to put one finger and say"yeah,i'm the king of the world"
You have to know how to play to take control of these synths!

I saw a post in this hate thread from somebody who wrote the jupiter was for "mariage".
They just have to realize how it's difficult to play well some hours for a mariage at a certain level.
it's far better and proffessional than a bedroom keyboard player.

This is a good point. One of the things I hate about Karma (on OASYS and Kronos), is this 'band in a box' idea.

Would never say that on korg forums but it is like you say. Go to a combi, switch Karma on, and then boom! A whole band playing away - with one finger. Hate it!

Karma is so powerful and creative - it is so wrong to use it that way.

The JP-80 however is a dream to play and create with - nothing automated (apart from arps and some of the Fx - step seq, for example) - it's just the machine and your imagination. Something that is severely lacking at GearSlutz it would appear.

90% of the people on GS forums are elitist jerks really. There are very few actual useful comments most of them are very hateful. They basically hate anything that's either new or popular and every single successful artist. It's sad really.

As for the JP80, I shared my opinion before, it is truly a special keyboard and I consider myself fortunate to have it!
