What Can I do to Make the Organ Sound like an Organ?

What Can I do to Make the Organ Sound like an Organ?

30 Apr 2012, 18:47
I own a Jupiter 80, Korg Kronos, Roland V-Synth GT and a Korg Triton Extreme. I am bringing up a point that I feel needs to be addressed here: I cannot get the "organ" sounds on my J80 to "really" sound like an organ! The Triton, Kronos & even the GT have better organ sounds that the J80. Why is this? I would figure Roland would have had this part figured out by now. I play in a 60's-70's type band & need good organ sounds. I actually was told to bring back my 5+ year old Triton & use that instead! I bought the J80 to replace the Triton but now I am in a dilema.
I do not have the space or "resources" to keep four major keyboards. I've kept the GT mostly for the vocoder. Has anyone else had this issue or is it just me? Any suggestions, aside form giving it away, would be helpful. Thanks!

I use a Neo Ventilator pedal connected to the SUB OUT jacks. For organ sounds I use the lower registration with output assign to the SUB OUT jacks. Other pedals may work well too. I run in stereo which helps get the Leslie effect.

There are thousands of different organ sounds. You need to specify exactly what kind of organ sounds you are after.

Hey LaterDood! Thats funny!! Fishy...He says: "The Triton, Kronos & even the GT have better organ sounds that the J80. Why is this?" I say, Only a Hammond B3 sounds better!!

May I ask if you bothered to demo the JP80 before buying it?? Or listen to sample sounds?

I unfortunately did not get a chance to hear it before I bought. It was only out for 2 months & I was made a great deal at the time($2600 out the door-total) so I bought it on a whim. Anyways, I am trying to get an organ sound from 'Grand Funk Railroad' called Foot Stompin Music. I think the thing is that the J80 sound doesn't come across with any bite. Seems passive-not in your face. That songs needs a good growly organ & I am having trouble getting close to it. Any extra help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Bill.

So who's fault is that yours or the JP-80 ?

If you want help then ask for help , don't criticize the instrument and then ask for help, it comes off as trolling .

Why would you buy a keyboard you never heard before to replace all your synths that have been working for you so far , why not just use the Kronos . I'm sorry but you are making no sense . The synths that you say you have already would suggest that you are experienced with the art of buying a synth now all of a sudden you have no idea what you are doing and even reference giving the JP-80 away . I'm sorry , I'm not buying it .

Foot Stompin? Yeah good luck. I've been trying to cop that tone with my XK3c. I suppose the bite comes from the cranked up leslie or two with speakers blasting...possibly a guitar amp in the mix too. It almost sounds like the part was double tracked. Try lots of compression, overdrive and EQ to taste.

Most of the organ tones are passible in a gig situation. I don't think the OP is trolling and I agree the TW organ is less than inspirational compared to my XK3c.

To ROCNESS...I'm sorry but did you invent the J80? Or were you part of the research team that came up with it? Or did you personally help finance the project? If so, I did not mean to step on your toes. I apologize. For the Super Natural part, it is a fantastic instrument. The synth sounds great in a lot of respects. It is a keeper in that case. All I was staing is that....(here I go) I "assumed" the organ sounds would be a little more realistic. Or at least on par to what I had already. It was just frustrating when other band memebers are telling me for the last three weeks to bring back my 5 year old keyboard & dump the J80! Keep in mind I sold a Kurzweil K2600XS and a Nord Lead 2X to buy this. The guy who sold it to me just made the fantastic deal & I thought it would save my back lugging around an 80 pound Kurzweil. My local guitar center was not even going to get one in for another 2 months for me to look at so once again, I took a gamble.
We who own this are not going to just "dump it off" for a lack of "quality sounds" when there are too many other things that are great about it. All I wanted was some help....that's all. Sooo....
If you had nothing to do with the invention of the J80, what's your problem? I never said it was going to replace all my synths(where did you get that from)?? My Triton, yes, it was to replace it-now I'm not so sure. You know, all you had to do was be a little more "understanding" like Devnor mentioned trying a compressor, just not kicking me when I need help. Just chill a little....BTW, I have no idea what trolling is....

Lastly....they don't make a 76 key "synth action" Kronos or I would have bought that instead & there would be no complaint on my part. The Kronos I have stays put at home.

Thanks to Jobo & Devnor for trying to help. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds that sound hard to get. Thanks again for your input, Bill.

Yeah I would leave Kronos at home also!! LOL.. especially with all the key and case problems.

And I agree with Rocness RE: "your criticizing the instrument and then ask for help, it comes off as trolling"
I as a teenager had all the Grand Funk albums, and then saw them in person..what a disappointment from the recorded albums I was used to hearing !! Foot Stompin had 2 band members on keys to give it that dual grunge sound as seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZj1uElADZw and it is Mark Farner on a Hammond B3 with Leslie. ,,and Craig Frost on keyboards also,.

I guess I owe the group an apology. I never intended to use "trolling" to upset people. Never knew what that was until now. In all honesty, I really only wanted help. Sorry to bother you all........

"Urban dictionary : Trolling is trying to get a rise out of someone. Forcing them to respond to you, either through wise-crackery, posting incorrect information, asking blatantly stupid questions, or other foolishness. However, trolling statements are never true or are ever meant to be construed as such. Nearly all trolled statements are meant to be funny to some people, so it does have some social/entertainment value.

First of all, welcome to RolandClan (despite the reception not being very nice ;-) )
Second, I could even understand Rocess and RayS's critics, that a very experienced keyboard player should not do such a basic mistake (not trying before buying), but I can't agree on the method they used to show it to you. Take it easy guys...he just got here... ;-)

That said, from what I've tried so far, the JP-80 organs are not the best around (and that I think everyone agrees), although IMHO they are missing on effects and not on tonal characteristics. However we can improve them using some external boxes like the one Jobo described. In my particular example, I tried myself a Boss RT-20 with it and to my ears it sounded incredible.

take care

Have to be honest I hate electric organs!

I have deleted every single registration, liveset and tone that sounds even close to one - not because they are good or bad quality; it's just I hate the sounds.

And now I've got lots of lovely extra slots for saving something worthwhile and is not a waste of electricity like electric organs!!!!

I agree with PauloF though - I think the guys were a little 'on your case' - but they're all good people and am sure the didn't wish to offend - so welcome to RC L8RDOOD; hope you're successful in your quest!
