External keyboard will not trigger Rhythm Sets

I just got a used JV2080, and already have an XP80 and JV1080, so I'm very familiar with the architecture. My problem is that while my external midi keyboard (not the xp80) would trigger rhythm sets in the jv1080, it will not in the 2080.
Instead, whatever Performance was last selected is played instead. The Rhythm Set channel is 10, and both Performances and Patches play fine (the Patch channel is 1). I tried changing the keyboard channel to 10, but still the Rhythm Sets don't play.
Notably, I did not change the external keyboard to 10 to get the 1080 to play drums; I believe the keyboard was just set at 1.
Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts, they would be greatly appreciated.
