XR Arpeggios

XR Arpeggios

Hi all,

I'm still trying to feel my way around my new/secondhand XR and hoping someone can help demystify the arpeggio feature for me...

I've created a custom arpeggio and saved it, but can't figure out how to link a patch to the arpeggio so that when I select a patch the correct arpeggio is also selected and turned on, so all I have to do to hear the arp is play a key on my controller. The manual

I'm also a bit confused about arpeggio tempos. I think the manual says that tempo information isn't saved with arpeggios and that all arpeggios play at the global system tempo. Is that right? If the system tempo is set to 120bpm and I need an arp to play at 140bpm, I have to go into the XR's system menu and adjust the system tempo to 140bpm?

I'd appreciate any insights.

Hi cmayo,

According to p.98 of the XR's OM "When you save a performance, the arpeggio on/off status and the settings of the Arpeggio screen will also be saved. If you want to create a specific combination of sounds and arpeggio settings, make your settings in Performance mode and save them."

I'm guessing that means that if you select arp pattern 'USER-017' (or whatever) then save the Performance it will save the arp style too. Is this something you can do in Performance mode instead of Patch mode? (I'm not sure how to do it in Patch mode from reading the manual).

Performances also store their own Tempo whereas Patches use the Global tempo, if I remember rightly.

Thanks very much, Andy, I think that's going to work for me. I hadn't really looked at performances on the XR, preferring to confine my learning curve to the patch level, but you (and the OM) are correct... the performance retains the arp setting. Still can't figure out how to get the unit to save/apply anything but the system tempo to the arp or performance, but since I'm only using one arp at the moment, I'll just set my system tempo accordingly and get back into the OM to try and figure the rest out.

I will ask, though, is it possible to change the XR from patch to performance mode with a MSB/LSB/PC message? I'm sending what I think is the appropriate sequence (MSB=85, LSB=32, PC=2) from my controller when the XR is in Patch Play mode, but that sequence only selects a non-existent patch 00 and doesn't change the XR from patch to performance mode.

Thanks again,
Chuck

No problem. Keep on, you'll get there. There's a lot to learn with the X and the XR.

Doesn't "Writing" (saving) the Performance save the arp & tempo settings as well?

Regarding switching between Patch and Performance mode: I believe you can only do this through SysEx from your sequencer. Check out this thread for the SysEx codes. In fact, this crops up now & again, so I'll add the codes to the Fantom-X Tips and Tricks thread.

So, you'd need to send the appropriate mode code if you are changing modes followed by the Bank (MSB/LSB) and PC numbers as usual.
