Supernatural Grand Piano Custom Settings

15 Dec 2011, 15:21
Hello,

I have looked every combinations of keywords in the search function as I can think of, but cannot find any threads on this. If there is one, would you kindly link to it for me?

I just received the Supernatural Piano kit and was wondering if anyone has made any custom settings they like more than the default ones. While I really like the sounds right out of the box, I think some improvements might be made by someone who has tweaked it for some time.

My main complaint is the nasally sound of the mid section of the keyboard. I also find a lack of brilliance in the lower register. Its almost like they are being muffled.

I would really really appreciate anyone's advice.

Thank you!
Michael

start by changing the key touch setting in the MENU. i find MEDIUM -5 is a good setting to get a brighter sound.

also play with the EQ. a touch of gain around 2500Hz with Q of 2 will give it a nice sparkle.

as far as other settings i like to mess with sound so ive made all sorts of different variations in my NX.
the biggest changes i do is the key touch response, a touch of EQ, damper noise (i like that noise), and play with the duplex values to get a nice rich sound. i like to add +1 hammer noise too on the bright piano sounds.

Thanks a lot kenchan!

I made the adjustments you recommended to the eq and key touch and its sounds much brighter and I am finding it easier to use dynamics. Keeping the melody louder than the harmony is actually coming out now! (I play classical music)

I messed with the duplex scale but did not notice much difference even from its lowest setting to its highest setting. Could you explain to me exactly what that is?

Also, anyone else have any suggestions? This could be a very useful thread for people if we all chip in our own preferences. I am defiantly going to be experimenting and will post anything I find myself.

Thanks again!
Michael

sounds good, michaelrp7. :) you might also find that the electric piano's come alive when you use light keytouch setting as well. i think i had mine set at like slight -5 or something almost in super-light territory.

the duplex is the sympathetic vibration or the string's harmonics. it's a subtle change but it helps make the sound fuller and brighter if that is what you prefer. it models the string resonance from like the front/back position of the piano. it's quite cool to have this as it almost mimicks my VPiano's string resonance simulation.

the more you play with the RD's setting you can get so much more imho! i think people can get a good 40-50% increase in appreciation just by editing the key touch response to their liking. the RD is quite good and i so far i luv its piano's!!

michael- hey another thing i tried was to narrow the STEREO WIDTH setting on my piano's from 63 to 43. wow, very nice intimate sound. try it on yours and let me know. the piano sounds a lot clearer and refined, also even more realistic as if you're really sitting in front of an acoustic piano. :)

ive also played with layers under my piano's.. like soft pads in the background on the mid-upper registers, strings on the lower registers, tremolo strings on harder hit middle register, etc. pretty cool stuff. basically something my FantomG would do on a daily basis but surprised how well the RD can do this too with lots of expression.

coming from the Nord StageEX with similar features, i think the RD is much better in most all aspects, especially the piano's.

I have both the Nord Stage 2 and the RD-700GX including the SuperNatural Piano Expansion.

To be honest the RD pianos have much better dynamics and sound just beautiful when playing for your own.
But in a live gig situation the Nord pianos cut through better.
When it comes to string and pad sounds Roland is unbeatable.
But organs are poor compared to Clavia.

So all in all I gig with Clavia and do studio stuff with Roland exept for organs.

i dont like the flacky thin sound of the nord, thus i sold it. it sounded good during the honeymoon period but after a while it just didnt work for me. you can play with the EQ's on the RD and a touch of sound-focus to get it thin like the nord if that's what's preferred to cut through.

i think the one thing nord benefits is the carrying weight.

i added my take on the RD700NX vs my VPiano and CP1 here if you want some read...

these are based on my own experience and opinions. my preference in sound is acoustic pianos and Tines electric pianos. i dont really care for reeds, SA/DX pianos, organs, clavs, harps, etc.
