That's impossible to say without any information what you do with the instrument and where/how you use it.

I do not you the Fantom G for squencing or sampling. I mostly use the sound from the fantom and tweek them. I never was really big on the sounds on the fantom, but more so the features.

I gig live with both a G7 and a Yamaha XS6. I midi the two together, playing only the Roland and importing sounds to the G7 from the XS6 where needed. I find the G7 has better guitar, horn and string sounds. Yamaha I use for piano, synth and organ (adding them to the G7 sounds). I find that the XS6 "feels" better than the G7, but I play the G7 because I can move navigate within the G7 is easier than the XS6. Different architectures. Roland has the 512 Liveset continuous "wheel" while the XS6 has the pyramid of User banks 1-2 /A-H locations /- 1-16 subsets.

The big screen of the G7 allows for easier changes "live" or at practice. The G7 knobs/sliders/transpose info can be seen on the big screen and manipulated with immediate feedback on the screen.

So your choice might come to quality of sounds you need/hear versus your ability to move about the board.
Each board has its strengths and weaknesses. Prioritize your needs. Good luck witih your decision.

If it's an even swap go for it... The xf is worth more than the fantom.

Sound wise they are just different.. To make a simplistic generalisation i would say anythin acoustic in nature I feel is equal or better on the motif while anything synth in nature equal or better on Fantom

If he doesn't like the Motif, and you don't like the Fantom G, than it's a perfect trade!

Before trading or swapping the fantom G, take the necessary time to DEEPLY study the workstation and all of its capabilities. It blows me away how lazy people are when they purchase an instrument of of this caliber and spend 2 weeks fumbling around with it, never reading the manual, or educating themselves on it, then jump on a forum and trash it like they understand every aspect of the device!!! Let me say this......both the fantom G and the Motif xf are truly amazing workstations in their own right however......they are only as powerful as the mind of the musician stroking their ivorys......there are actually advanced college type courses avalable to learn and master the full capabilities of the Fantom G!!! DUDES THE KEYBOARD IS THAT TECHNICALLY ADVANCED!!! Roland dumped so much into this board that they must discontinue it because they can't sell it for what its worth......HISTORY MAY NEVER SEE ANOTHER WORKSTATION LIKE THIS AGAIN!!! Several things u need to maximize its potential besides STUDYING THE BOARD FOR 6-8 MONTHS.......must insert DIMM card....must install the incredible ARX-01 drum expansion module and the even more incredible ARX-03 brass expansion module......the rest is up to how much u really wanna learn and how high u really wanna fly this jet
