I've spent way too much time "testing" the Jupiter. My belief is Jupiter is simply fixed at 64 poly per section.
i too have spent way too much time on this, devnor and i'm glad (in a way!) that i'm not the only one getting these results! i agree that it's pretty obvious each layer or part has a 64 voice poly limit, and this is the major problem with the voice architecture because it makes the 256 voice figure roland are quoting theoretical at best! indeed in my attempts to try and max the polyphony i only achieved around 170 voices as previously described. now that was merely an experiment and in no way constituted what i and, i would imagine, other users would call a musically meaningful scenario. what i WOULD call meaningful, however, is building a juicy fat live set (or indeed using a roland factory set/reg) and being able to play at least 5 and 6 note chords CLEANLY on it! and because of the 64 voice limit, this is impossible to do in some cases! in fact reg 01 A7 is a pretty good example of what i'm saying here because the solo part is restricted to playing only from c2 downwards, so for any time you're playing chords above c2 there is a whole 64 notes of polyphony that are sorely needed to fill out the chords but of course cannot be used because they are allocated to the solo part that is playing nothing at all!
i don't know how easy it would be for roland to rethink the voice architecture and do away with the 64 voice per layer limit but it would surely be a more practical not to mention musical way of doing it - voices would then be used as and when they're needed, which is, in my case at least, pretty often!
am i the only one who thinks this sucks hugely? i'm pretty much agreeing with an earlier poster on this thread who said that the synth is not working as advertised - and that is not something to lightly ignore.
cheers
