Oh yes we are going there. If I make a cool patch, err live set on my Jupiter how do I share it with my friends?

LIVE SET/TONE BUTTONS

Here you can specify the sounds (Live Sets or tones) that will be assigned to the Part sound
buttons (Upper, Lower, Solo).

MEMO
The sounds you specify here will be saved as system parameters (settings for the entire
JUPITER-80). If you specify sounds within a Registration, the Registration settings will take
priority.

REFERENCE
• “Using the Part Sound Buttons to Switch Live Sets or the Solo
Part’s Tone” (p. 36)
• “Instantly Switching the Variation Sounds (Alternate Button)” (p.
37)

Parameter Explanation

SOLO Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the Solo Part sound buttons.

SOLO Alternate Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the sound buttons when the Solo
Part [ALTERNATE] button is pressed.

UPPER Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the Upper Part sound
buttons.

UPPER Alternate Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the sound buttons when the Upper
Part [ALTERNATE] button is pressed.

LOWER Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the Lower Part sound buttons.

LOWER Alternate Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the sound buttons when the Lower
Part [ALTERNATE] button is pressed.

PERCUSSION Specifies the sounds that will be assigned to the Percussion Part sound buttons.
I am going to suggest that any sound settings will be saved as System parameters and therefore would be saved on the USB key, much like a project file on the 'G'. Without working with the JP80 first hand, I can comment no further.

If you make a cool patch or live set or whatever and want to share it with your friend, you'll sit down, take a paper and a pencil (it will be faster if you use a computer and you are skilled on writing on a computer keyboard) and write the patch down manually. Than you'll send the written parameters to your friend and he will manually put the parameters into his jp80.
That's the way how it works on the JP80.
And if I may say, not only didn't Roland listen to the numerous complains about the file sharing/writing/loading on the FG, they even find a good way to make a significantly step backwards. According to the jp80 manual (p. 79), not only that you can't load a single patch (call it whatever you like), you simply create a backup of the whole system on your usb and load it back into the jp80 if you need it. And if you think that this is the worst part, than Roland comes even with more: you can't even name that backup!
Happy file sharing.

Of course, you could always share Sysex data contained in a MIDI file . . .

The Registration Exchange function also intrigues me . . . a registration contains all sound and system parameter data!? Registrations can be saved on a USB key and . . . obviously exchanged.

Yes. And you got the answer to your question. Either overwrite your whole keyboard status/sounds with the file from your friend or do it with the paper/pencil method.

No not really although your response made me laugh out loud. Nice one.

taking a polaroid of the panel is a nice solution as well.

works for the analogue modulars, should work for the latest fancy synth as well.

You want something more up-to-date with current technology...

... take the picture using your i-phone.

[anybody knows where the "emoticon" menu is on this forum? I urgently need a "sarcastic and vaguely lunatic smirk"]

this is the problem with new gear..
we get so overwhelmed by the OOh and aawww that we never get time to find how it works.

Now people say.. go to forums and research etc..
but the issues that arise are never something you can research on a new product..
but hey.. im sure this is the 1st of many

Just curious...
does the JP come with a pc editor?
Or Vst?

We're a little dead in the water. There is no way to share a tone or live set or vice versa. Maybe they are staying true to the Jupiter 8 in this regard...your couldnt save individual patches on cassette!

Who knows? Editor? Probably not planned by Roland & the touch screen seems sufficient for most functions.

"taking a polaroid of the panel is a nice solution as well."

A Polaroid? Wow. Haven't heard THAT term in quite a few years now. ;-)

That's good ol ozy for ya... not so much 'old school'; more 'vintage' or 'classic'! ;-)

PKG.. are you sure?..

saving a live set or registration to USB would both make sense.. the one to share a patch/whatever and the other to share a performance.. but the manual does not indicate you can save anything but a complete system dump to USB..

No! Actually, I'm not sure! I just finished talking with my friend Adrian Marsi, who is the Pro Keyboards Product Specialist for Roland Corporation here in Canada. At this point, the back-up function is the only option. However, he has already "fed back some comments about user back up options to (our) engineers". Sounds like some refinements are in the works.
