Question about "Parts" in Studio Mode

Question about "Parts" in Studio Mode

22 May 2011, 20:25
Ok, I understand you can have 16 parts in studio mode to work with, so let's say you have a "strings" part assigned to part 2, and you have 3 or 4 midi channels all using that part...let's say those are midi channels 1-4. Now, you decide you want to change just midi channel 1 to a different sound...how can you do this? I don't think you can change the part or ALL the midi channels using it will play the new part...correct? So, how do I change just one midi channel to a different sound after it's been recorded? I can't seem to figure it out...!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Brian

Once recorded, the parts / midi channels inside a certain phrase can be changed using the "Change channel" editing feature of the phrase modify menu.

and you have 3 or 4 midi channels
There's a big confusion going on there.
You can't have 3 or 4 MIDI channels playing the same part. Each part has its one and only MIDI channel. However you can have several TRACKS, playing the same PART. In the case you want a pre recorded TRACK to play a different SOUND you must change the recorded channel in the track using the method G-man described to play a different part/sound.

^^^ Ok, I'll try that change part option...

When I said "midi channel" I meant "midi track"...sorry for the confusion!

But thes brings up another question...let's say I'm using Phrase 0999 for my Hi Hat in several different songs...If I want to use the "change channel" feature does it change ALL the songs that use Phrase 0999? Cause I wouldn't want it to effect every song, just the one I'm currently composing.

the short answer is that if you edit it, then its then no longer phrase 0999 :)

^^^ Mystic...!!!

Um, I'm confused? Are you just suggesting that I resave the phrase as a different name once I change the "part" it uses?

If so, then that would lead me to believe that the "part" is save with the phrase and not just the keystroke data...and that would include throughout all songs. If that's true, then what would happen if you were already using all 16 parts and you wanted to add a phrase that contains a part that isn't in one of your current 16...???

Thanks!

Brian

i was observing that if you change the information in a phrase then its no longer that same phrase
:)

When you save a phrase, the sound generator channel number (part) is part of the phrase information.. so a phrase will play whatever patch is on that part in the studio set, unless you include a PC message as part of the phrase

Ok...so, it really comes down to whatever is in the studio set? If the phrase is playing "part 4", then it plays "part 4" all the time (unless you change it as described before). Now, "part 4" is determined by the studio set... is this correct?

If so, then let me ask this...let's say I have song 1, studio set 1.

Now, I have a simple hi-hat phrase... 1,2,3,4...let's call it Phrase1000. Now, I have "part4" assigned to this phrase and I'm using a hihat sound out of a hiphop kit. Ok, no problems so far.

Now, I start a new song named song 2, along with studio set 2...and I use the same Phrase1000 for my hi-hats, only this is a rock song, so I assign "part4" to a Rock kit for a completely different hihat sound.

My question is, how does this affect Phrase1000? Does it play the "rock kit" sound for all the other songs that use Phrase1000?

I'm trying to figure out how this works so I can keep things in order...I mean, it seems pointless to have 10 different "Phrases" that all have the exact same keystroke information, the only difference is the sound assigned. How would you ever keep all the phrases straight? It would be different if you could name them with highly descriptive names, but you don't have many letters to work with in naming these...

I think I need a beginners course in how the "studio set" works with the "song" and how the "parts and phrases" interact with them...lol...

"My question is, how does this affect Phrase1000? Does it play the "rock kit" sound for all the other songs that use Phrase1000?"

no it wont.... if you have part 4 as hiphop kit in song 1 it plays hiphop kit in song 1, if you have rock kit as part 4 in song 2 then it plays rock kit in song 2.. as i said the phrase 1000 is gonna play part 4... in songs 3-100, whatever patch you have assigned to part 4 in your studio set will get played.

cheers, M38

what time zone are u Brian?.. pm me if you would like to chat through this

Yes Brian... You have it correct there. The Phrase has an association with the Part (part number only). It is the Patch that is assigned to that part # which is controlled and set in Studio Set/Studio mode. So the same Phrase 1000 could set out the same hi hat pattern (with same velocity etc etc) in multiple songs, if those songs use that same Phrase.... and the individual Studio Set associated with each of those individual songs will define what patches will be played for that particular song, thru the definition of the Part.

OK now?
