Laptop Festival
21 Jun 2004, 19:04I posted this over at the SSS forum too, but I wanted to share it with my special friends over here...

This is my first "spam" post, but since it's for a not-for profit, I don't think it should actually be considered spam. The Electronic Music Foundation is currently organizing, among other things in connection with it's 10th anniversary, this laptop festival. It sounds like it could be a very interesting event. It is only open to EMF subscribers, which requires a donation (hence, the "spam"). But, I figure, especially on this forum, there would be a lot of people interested in supporting an organization like this. You should browse the site (www.emf.org) -- there's lots of great stuff on there, including an electronic music history timeline and a CD store (cdEmusic) that sells electronic music you can't find anywhere else. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm on the board, but I'm also a contributor! Here's an email that went out today to subscribers:

EMF 10: Call for participation in a laptop festival
As part of our 10th-year programming, we're organizing a worldwide laptop performance festival to take place between February and June 2005 in many places in many countries. This may very well turn out to the largest festival that has ever taken place.
Our goals are to demonstrate worldwide community and the use of music technology to empower individual creativity. More, we plan to document this festival in a dedicated website containing audio clips, images, descriptions of the events, and information on the participants so that this festival and everyone involved in it will mark for all time a vital moment in our cultural history.
By 'laptop event', we mean that a laptop should play an essential role as the generator of musical information or as the performance instrument. A laptop event can of course be a solo event. But it can also include images, musicians other than the laptop player, or outboard hardware (i.e. input devices, converters, dsp systems).
We'd like to invite you to participate, as an advisor to help us organize a laptop event or series of events wherever you live and/or as a performer in a concert.
If you'd like to join us in this project, please let us know now so we can list your name on the soon-to-be-launched EMF10 website and in fundraising proposals. We'll also include your name in an email list, making it possible for you to communicate with everyone else who is participating. During the next few months, we'll work out the details.
EMF 10: Opening date
More information and a website will be coming soon on EMF 10. Our plans are still developing and changing, and it looks as if our opening date will be later in the fall than we originally anticipated. We'll of course let you know as soon as the specific dates are set.
