G7 has frozen at 70% of initial load

G7 has frozen at 70% of initial load

17 Jan 2011, 18:53
I had been controlling my Motif XS6 with the G7. After turning off both boards and turning both on again, the G7 "freezes" after loading only 70% of the data (stops at Pad 13 with "Q_who drum - 25" on the LED screen). I have only 1 midi channel from the Motif X6 in use.

Any thoughts as to how to "unfreeze" the G7.

thanks - rohamm

It sounds like your project has got corrupted.

Unplug all usb sticks and switch on the G holding down the exit button the same time.

This should allow you to boot up bypassing the project and let you do a factory reset.
Whine whine everywhere and not a drop to drink ;)

Thank you! Powering on + holding down the exit key worked - Board by- passed and came up like it had been factory reset. I did a factory reset anyway, loaded my USB again and then did an internal save..

Project came back. Thank you for the very quick response!

Might the corruption have occurred with the Roland talking to the Motif?

As you have been sending MIDI data between the Fantom-G and the Motif, I wonder did you have the Fantom-G's MIDI Sync Output set to 'on'?

I refer to the setting that is accessed via Menu > System > Sync/Tempo > Sync Output.

I ask because there is a bug in the Fantom-G's operating system which might possibly have something to do with it.

If the Sync Output is set to 'on' by default - ie, saved in the system settings - the Fantom-G can suffer problems loading projects properly.

Most often that will take the form of random samples, phrases and other data failing to load. There will be individual data files missing from your projects. But sometimes it seems to cause projects to freeze when loading, especially if that's being done during boot-up.

I reported this bug about a year and a half ago, and its existence has been acknowledged by Roland. Unfortunately, though, they have still not fixed it.

Most people don't seem to notice this issue - presumably they don't use the Fantom-G in the same way - but I have certainly found it a major inconvenience as it means I can't configure the Fantom-G's settings for the way that I prefer to work. I have to go into the system menu each time and set it manually.

I HAD changed the Sync/Tempo to "on" and done a system write and then the "freeze" occurred. I undid the Sync/Temp "on" back to "off" with the Factory reset and now the board loads the projects properly.

Here on in, I will have the Sync/Tempo turned to "off" when I shut the board down. When I turn the board back on, I then will reset the Sync/Tempo to ''on".

Thanks for the help and info.

I'm glad it helped. Shame that Roland haven't sorted this yet. It took me absolutely ages to work out what was causing the problems - a process involving trying nearly every setting - and then running numerous tests to prove that my theory about the MIDI Sync Output setting was correct.

This bug was reported by Roland UK after I drew it to their attention and it had been hoped that OS update v1.50 would fix things, but unfortunately it didn't.

Just make sure you don't lose any data as a result of this issue. It's easy to forget to alter the setting manually. Probably best not to system write the change after altering the setting; then you can switch off the Fantom-G normally without thinking about it. If your project does load rather than freeze with this setting on, it is likely that there will be random samples. phrases, etc, missing. If you then save that project again with the data missing - which would be easy to do if the missing files were from a song you weren't working on at the time - those files will disappear for good.

It is a pain, though. We shouldn't have to worry about this sort of thing. C'mon, Roland: even if you guys do nothing else with the Fantom-G, please fix this.

Re: G7 has frozen at 70% of initial load

It has been about a week since the "freeze" occurred. I have found that leaving the Sync Output to "off" ALL THE TIME (system write), and doing both an internal project "Save" and a USB "Save As" after each session, has both stopped the "freeze" and retained all the data that I input. Without both the "Save" and "Save As" steps, I was finding that while the G7 may not have "frozen", all the data I was inputting to channel 1 (from the Motif) was not loading. Hence the need for the USB save each time, just in case.

Thanks again for the help -rohamm
