To me: Sell FG was a blessing...

Rd 700 Gx, Gx1 and a Daw. All I needed.

"real synth than a rompler. "

Hmmm..
strange the way some people keep viewing the fantom as a rompler and not a synth.

especially when the fantom provide a diverse range of waves and more manipulation than any synth.
if you want a dedicated synth you can configure the G to be just that.

Pattern sequencing??
the G does that in droves
chain patterns?
why do you feel you can not achieve this with the g?

anyway each to his own..

my fantom g gets used more and more as time goes by even in the presence of sonar and numerous top of the range soft synths. i think it is excellent for music production. its needs a much better piano sound for general playing and solo stuff ( so do the m3 and motif ) and a few mods in the sequencer section would be the icing on the cake ( which we will never get ) its usability stability and great synth sounds are superb. i carnt see me ever selling it. love it.

@Quinnx :

The FG sequencer is not as I see it a real patterna based
sequencer and if you can not understand that you propably
never has used one yourself ;-)

The FG has a linear sequencer with all events in a row and that
doesn´t work for me.... ( on the FG you copy patterns (or phrases)
in a row and thats a big difference from using a sequencer that
can chain patterns together from a song list, if you see the difference)

And its a big difference creating synth sounds with someting that
has PCM based synth waveforms vs something that has "real"
oscillator waveforms ,even if they are V-A, you´ve propably
never tried that either... ;-) Also if you want good editing to make
sounds from scratch you need something with a better user interface
= more knobs.

But with that Im not saying the FG is bad, its just that I need
something else that fit my needs better.

rolandnald. can you explain the practical difference between a pattern and a phrase based sequencer except for the linguistics. and how one can do something the other cannot ? who cares if its pcm or digital modelled ? ( i have both ) the means are non relevant. its the result that matters. i have ni massive fm8 rapture zeta and zebra. and still use more fg sounds than all of them put together.

If I may, I believe the question was concerning the difference between patterns and phrases, not between pattern-based sequencing and linear sequencing. If the Roland Fantom 'G' does not have a 'pattern-based' sequencer, I don't know who does.

If you want to get stuck on semantics, all sequencing is linear!

Well I understand the VA thing i have used them and there are times something like PWM would be interesting..
But at the end of the day its all about making sounds either real or imagined..
For me the G has so many variations that whatever a VA will produce the G can duplicate...
As far as more nobs go.. for me the interface is very fluid and logical and once you become familiar with its deepest levels it all becomes 2nd nature and you dont have to realy think about it any more..

and as far as linking patterns..
there are many ways to link patterns in the G and recall that sequence in an instant..
I have briefly use a yamaha sound module that was pattern based and know the difference between them and from my experience can see how the G can emulate pattern sequencing in a similar way be it not exactly but the result will be the same.

I thought we kissed "Rolandnald biggs" goodbye, last year.

But I tell you, while the Fantom G has more depth of control and excellent synthesizer power, my new Gaia is a blast, no menus to solve, just sliders to move. I can't figure out weather it's pattern based or linear, but it has been a great addition to my Fantom G7 based studio. (I also got a Korg microStation, and it is behaving very well with the FG.)
Fantom G & X7, Motif XS6, M3, V-synth, JP8000, M1, Wavestation, Radias, Nord Lead 2X, Karma, Snow, electribes and other groove boxes.

(Yep, we kissed Goodbye last year, but is it OK that I reply to the questions
I´m given ? ;-) )

I´m glad that you guys are completely satisfied with the FG sequencer
and synth engine/interface and that it suits your workflow well, to me that
was not the case. It´s also of course a question of how well you can adapt
to things, to me the FG was good but not perfect and had too many limits,
and now I know what I need to replace it with. :)

(But I´m out of this tread now, and the FG forum also, forever...... ;-) )

Cheers !

i suppose if i was to go pattern based i would look into Machine and maybe those grooveboxes from Korg.

only thing is they're DJ oriented so they all sound too techno-crap...well, i suppose you can sample your own drums and use that.

Prior to the Fantom G, the fantom X and the Juno both had pattern based recording (and display) for rhythm and arpeggios... very useful and a feature sadly lacking in the G...cannot view rhythm patterns or arps, cannot easily edit one and can't edit the other. "work"station it truly is...

@kenchan.. sonar et all also provide some basis for pattern based, though without the simplicity of those groovebox dookickeys.. but you are right, they are mostly useful for techno-crap..and as i like that stuff in a "its winter, i cant leave the house and i need to dull my senses kinda way" its one of my winter projects to see how well/easy sonar can do it..

Re: I´m kissing my FG6 goodbye....

yep, i know wat you mean by not being able to do much outside during the winter. hahaha.

i use a cheepo akai drum machine (groovebox) with my piano playing. mostly just a glorified metronome for me but since it can loop 2 different patterns back to back with indivdual fills, it's kinda fun. wish it had more natural drum sounds though... this is kinda why want to get the ARX01 in my FG8 and use that. but yah, i suppose the old fantoms did have a pattern based seq than the FG. i used my FA76 as my loop machine before getting the groove box.
