Hey all,

we're pleased to announce that the Nylon sound expansion has been ported to the earlier Fantom models, and is now available for purchase. It is a great addition for all musicians seeking for a real, clean and airy acoustic guitar.

Nylon is based solely on our own samples, recorded with custom Audio Magnifier technique featuring an array of microphones to capture organic body transients and natural variations with an unrivaled accuracy. Different playing variations, dynamics and microphone positioning are offered through a wide variety of highly-expressive patches and performances – plus, you can model your very own nylon guitar sounds.

I'm a guitarist first/keyboardist second, so I can say that I'm impressed with it and would recommend it, but the whole idea of sampling fret noise always bothered me. When I was taking guitar lessons I was constantly told that fret noise was a sign of poor playing and was as well taught methods to avoid it. There's a whole world of technique to keep your fingers at the proper distance from the strings to avoid the "scrapes" and "slides" that come from sloppy playing. I understand why sample libraries include this, particularly to those who are non-guitarists, but from the level of a purist I'd say it makes me wince when I hear lots of string scraping in a recording. But then you could as easily commend the enhanced level of realism. Both sides of the coin.

Also, modelling my own sounds would be a selling point for me on this in the event I ever decide to play the guitar with a keyboard, but you don't really say anything more about it in the post. Not to be critical, but just to give you my perspective.

Thanks for your review, Partick!

Regarding the fret noise, I could tell you the same about vocals (signers are taught breathing technique not to breathe in loudly), as well as piano (damper pedal noise, etc.). And yes, in the sample libraries of the last years, these things are now represented as making the sound "realistic". Let's just say that we provide the fret noises to those who want this sort of thing, by far not all of the patches make use of them.

As about modeling your own sounds, you can read about this in the user manual. It goes down to mixing different multisampled partials, which you can learn within an initialized patch.
