G6 + 88 key weighted controller?

G6 + 88 key weighted controller?

5 Dec 2010, 17:38
I'm dusting off the musical instruments and I've been out of the synth loop for a LONG time. My most recent keyboard is an Ensoniq EPS.. yes, from about 1990. I'm a home hobbiest, but occasionally play live for things such as weddings (far and few between).

So in the last couple of weeks I'm trying to get up to speed on the new toys... lots of stuff to learn. I'm 90% sure I'm going with the Fantom-G.. but which one? While I was at Guitar Center yesterday playing with this amazing piece of equipment, I learned that you can buy a controller only... who knew!? lol!

With that said, what do you think of the idea of getting a G6, then adding a weighted 88 key controller at a later time? Would I be missing out on anything, or is there anything that I couldn't do with that setup?

Thx!

I think you'd be happy with that if it's what you are looking for. You can record all piano related stuff by using the 88 key weighted controller (and record the performance directly to the Fantom G sequencer and you can use the G's keybed for synthy stuff. (non weighted keys)

Are there any limitations that I'm not thinking of? The only thing I can think of it having to lug around 2 keyboards, but I almost never do anything live (MAYBE once or twice a year at the most).

The g6 is going for $1500-$1600 on ebay right now. Looks like you can get a controller for about $300.

Better than the $2500 the G8 is going for on ebay.

An 88 Key Weighted-Action Controller “for about $300”?

I just "transformed" my old RD-170 in an 88 Key Weighted-action MIDI controller :-)

Now I "just" need th Fantom G!!! ;-)

or you can buy cheapo casio or yamaha keyboard with 61 keys for a total 122 keys. that's a lot of keys.

Yeap, we could, but where would be the weighted fun then?? ;-)

I don't have one (yet), so I really don't know if the G pianos are good or bad, but from the reports that I've been reading here, it is a matter of opinion and taste.

For me, the G addition would be mostly to replace my old Xa, that is showing some aging and to have a better controller and more intuitive interface for live.

Not sure what you're saying piaknowguy. Guitar Center had a brand new one for $400, so I'm taking an educated guess that I could get a used one for $300.

I've been looking for a weighted controller for my G6 for the last 2-3 weeks. I checked several controllers and digital pianos, including fatar sl880, korg sp300, several casio pianos and other in this price range. There was a very significant difference between all the keyboards I tried. Obviously, the action is not the same, so it affects both velocity and expression (some of them was really terrible!!). Finally I got myself a nice yamaha p85. I liked its action, its price and its weight (about 13kg). I carry it 1-2 times a week to play with my friends so the weight is quite important issue and I also use it for practice at home with headphones. As a controller it doesn't offer anything but a midi connection and channel selection which is also great (at least for me. I have enough buttons around me..). Its sound is not that important in this case since I use it just as a controller.
My advice - just connect some controllers to the fantom and get what's sounds and feels the best for you. If you can find a 2nd hand good piano it may be better,
good luck.

@rareeddy,
there is a huge difference in playability, feel and expression between boards.. and while i am sure a $400 controller is functionally suitable, ask why some also pay $2000 just for a controller..

Personally i would suggest going for a secondhand digital piano.. you get the weighted keyboard plus a second instrument... your budget dictates what you get, but older roland and yamaha stage pianos are great buys.

That's exactly why I turned my old RD-170 stage piano into a 88 key MIDI controller, which does have a couple very good piano and string sounds itself, but basically have a very nice keyboard/ action (for my taste... Not a fact ;-) )

@Rareddy.

I tend to be a little cynical when it comes to the question of quality in looking at the purchase of a $300 "weighted-action" controller. I am of the same mind-set as Mystic38 and PauloF. I would think that 'you get what you pay for', at least, this has been my experience! (This coming from someone who purchased an in-expensive EQ that came with an OMER'S MANUAL! It was returned shortly afterward. =D )
