quality of Fantom G mic preamp?

Hi all,

Just curious while waiting for the opportunity to buy a F-G....how would you folks rate the microphone preamp built-in to the Fantom G's interface? Is it "adequate", "inferior to a real interface", "tremendous".....?

In fact, how would you rate the A/D conversion in general?

I thnk it sounds great. I've been running a U87 into the F-G preamp directly for vocal tracks, and the tracks sound fantastic. They don't need any EQ or other fixing and they're sitting nicely in the mix. I have lots of high end preamps available (Manley, Univ Audio, API, Vintech) and had intended to use the F-G preamp tracks only as scratch vocals, but they sound so good I feel no need to re-do them with the high end preamps.

Thanks Rick, that's exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.

What Rick said. I was going to buy a high end Pre when I bought the Fantom G, but after laying down vocal tracks, I decided against it. The G does a great job for vocals.

listen to Michael's Lullaby, it was recorded exclusively with the G, which also has great effects built in. The G is a great all around machine.

The other songs were recorded with the Roland VS2400CD and the Alesis Fusion 6HD respectively. I like the quality of the song recorded on the G the best. There is a certain warmth that doesnt come through with the other recordings.

That really is impressive--thanks for posting a real-life example sound of the mic (is that your song, by the way?)

I am absolutely salivating, dying to get a hold of this synth....wow. When someone finally buys my Motif XS, thus getting me the money to buy a Fantom G, I am going to do the happy dance of all happy dances :)

canadave, I feel your pain as I see all the threads you've made. As for me I'll have to save up a little before I can buy anything.

If I had money I'd buy your XS7 too if you offered a low price.

Yes, its my song. I wrote it last week. A song from Michael Jackson to his kids, after he passed. It didnt start out that way, in fact it was a completely different song. For some reason, it ended up as it is and is one of the best songs I ever wrote. One of them songs I can listen to over and over again, even after the fact. It isnt very often I do that, as by the time I am done recording I generally want nothing to do with my music. :)

That vocal quality is great. I'm in need of some help. I'm trying to record vocals/acoustic guitar with a crappy 40$ microphone. The sound quality is just lacking. What type of microphone should i be using for such recordings. Also, I am having trouble getting a a real great tone on electric guitar/bass when recording directly in. When recording with both the electric guitars and the microphone, I have the audio input switch set to off. In other words I am not using the HI-z function or phantom power. Are my problems due to a cheap microphone and not so great guitars, or am I not utilizing the fantom properly? I have spent a lot of time messing with the mfx's and it doesnt seem to be getting me far.

I'm not very knowledgeable about mics but what you need is a good condenser to record vocals and acoustic guitars. Maybe someone else can recommend some cheaper models/brands.

Electric guitars HAVE to be recorded through an amp to get a decent sound. Ideally using 2 different mics at the same time. Try plugging the guitar to your amp and sticking your dynamic mic to it. Try different spots on the amp till you get the best sound.

Buy a Shure SM58 for vocals and a SM57 for recording guitars. You can get away with spending less than $200 and have great mics. My Michaels Lullaby was recorded with a SM58 Microphone.

I always tell everyone who is interested in recording... Do not spend a lot of money for mics. All mics are essentially the same, bar some frequency range differences that can be taken care of via EQ. Sure, larger studios use expensive mics and tailor each recording to the singers vocal styles... but Steven Tyler from Aerosmith is a prime example that you dont need to spend thousands to get an expensive sounding recording(Steven Tyler uses and has always used a SM58 for recording vocals in the studio).

Go cheap and EQ and compress out the inconsistencies.

I use a Kel HM-7U mic with my Fantom G and it sounds incredible.

I've noticed that mic placement is critical to get a good acoustic guitar recording.

just to ad a bit of contrast to the argument, i would avoid using an SM58 for recording your vocals

and also "Go cheap and EQ and compress out the inconsistencies. " is not the best advice ever, the human voice is the most natural sounding thing the human ear can hear, mess with the EQ too much and you can tell, best to hold off too much,

if your on a tight budget go for a beta 58 if you want more clarity and are going to have "heavy" vocals, if your softer of voice for the same price you can get a rode NT1-A condenser set which has a pop shield and shock mount in,

i have tested ALOT of mics, and it depends on the singer as to what sounds best, and also the preamp,

i happen to sound best on a C414 as opposed to a U87, but that's me so dont stick to one mic just cos steve tyler uses one.

and to stay on topic. :P the preamp on the fantom is more than adequate for the majority of vocals, but to bring out the best in your vocals try adding a multiband compressor to your vocal line if using a cheap mic, ittle help disguise the fact that its cheap.
