So finally it broke off

So finally it broke off

The USB port on Fantom G. It happened a while ago, I already done with my mourning over lost of "perfect" workstation, now that it is not perfect, it only so much more "my" with all it's deficiencies. First I had strange lost of connection, and eventually the plastic toung of USB port fell off, inside of the board. I have to use the tradition 5 pin midi port and main oudio output. Oh well... Don't see myself mailing it to a service. Did anyone try to open Fantom? At least would be nice to know how hard it is to get to back pannel, before I decide if I take my chances with fixing it. Thank you.

Taking apart the G is easy, i had to do it when some of my key's got damaged, just iunscre every black screw on the bottom panel, take out any expansion cards or dimm memory and gently slide and lift back cover.

accessing the usb connector is easy, you'd be surprised how much room is inside the G, there's not really alot in there.

sorry to hear about your USB port falling off, but i can say that mine is perfect and there is no 'deficiency' as you described it.

you're too rough with your equipment.

A good way to avoid this predicament is to connect a short USB extension cord to the port. That way, when you attach a USB drive, you're attaching it to the extension, not the port itself, and all the wear and tear is to the cheapo extension cord. My USB drive actually came with a four-inch extension cord for this exact purpose, but you can buy one cheaply enough.

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I can say I was kind of rough with it- it was standing on a 2nd tire and the back of my chair was hitting the back of the board. It is not the memory/USB stick that broke off, but the computer USB Out. And I gotta tell you that from beginning it was kind of loose in there- I was not surprised. Anyone knows how long the warranty? I bought it in May 2008. Do I order the part and ask friends to replace it, or should I take it to authorised Roland services? We don't have that many options to fix this type of gear locally and I would hate to leave it somewhere overnight.

They just don't make USB ports like they used to.

MFG warranty is only a year innit? Order it, if you trust you friends that is. ;)

Say it isn't so! :-O

Since there's soooooooooo much room inside the Fantom G you'd of thought Roland would have put some extra things in there just to fill it out a little... you know like a couple, three more ARX slots or some other goodies perhaps? ;) Just a thought...

As a side note, I owned a Yammie totl (top of the line) arranger a while back and at one point I opened it up and had a look around and it was literally "packed to the gills" jammed packed with hardly any empty space left over at all - for anything. Makes you wonder why Roland would indeed be producing cavernous keyboards with seeming echo chambers inside and having just the bare necessities - apparently. ;) Unless of course Roland's apparent compulsion and need to get the Fantom G to market to "meet a deadline" back in May '08 had something to do with it. ;) Hello!! Anything in there?? :D Besides the bare necessities that is? :D Hello..hello..hello...hello.. :P lol

Sorry.... I'm in a jovial mood and I'm trying to make light of an obvious structural flaw and/or limitation inside our "cavernous" keyboards. :) Hey, I wonder if you put the Fantom G in water... if it would float. :D lol

Okay, okay.. I'll stop. :)
