1980's Synth Pop (PRJ inside!)

1980's Synth Pop (PRJ inside!)

Hi all!

My wife and I have been tossing around the idea of doing an 80s Synth-Pop tribute band, just the two of us with two keyboards and all rhythm tracks sequenced into the G. Primarily stuff that originally used drum machines and synth bass, so that it will sound as authentic as possible and we won't be seen as "cheating"!

So anyway this gave me a new opportunity to play around with the G's sequencer. Since these tunes would be straight 4/4 and very pattern based I was ready to give the G sequencer a second chance (after totally abandoning it trying to do more complicated sequences with odd time sigs, etc). And I have to say for the first time in months I'm really having fun with my G again :)

So I thought I would share with you guys the fruits of my first few nights of labour, sequencing the Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls" and A-Ha's "The Sun Always Shines On TV" -- I'm psyched how well it turned out :) Thought some of you guys might like to check out the PRJ file itself. A couple of things I wanted to mention:

1) This was the first time I started using Markers, and was really pleasantly surprised by all the default marker names that are available (Intro, Chorus, Solo, etc). These really made it a lot easier to navigate around the song. For the first time in a long time I found myself saying "Wow Roland that rocks THANKS!"

2) This was also the first time I tried out my new approach to sequencing drums. For these tracks I made use of the various "Menu" kits ("Snare Menu", "Kick Menu", etc) to isolate the various kit elements on different tracks. This made it way easier to find exactly the kick and snare sounds that I wanted without having to dig through multiple full Kits. And it also made it much nicer for mixing. AND it will make it much nicer for exporting to a DAW. Just thought I would mention this because I hadn't seen this kind of approach talked about a lot but I'm loving it, it's really powerful!

I also put my drums starting on Track 9 instead of Track 10. This way, I can "page over" to the second bank of sliders and my Kick is on slider 1, Snare on slider 2, etc, for some reason it seems way nicer than having to hunt down the second slider, weird I know but it feels good! In fact I think for the next tune I'm going to start my Kick, Snare, etc. on Tracks 1, 2 etc...

3) Made lots of use of the "Offsets" page to get things sounding exactly how I wanted to. These songs do not really contain any custom patches, only modified stock patches! I believe the Offsets page is a real hidden powerhouse in the G and should be talked about more!

Let me know if the PRJ file works ok, this is my first time sharing a project :) Sorry it's about 12 megs but I have a sample in there for the West End Girls intro. I started work on "Rio" by Duran Duran, that's in there too but I don't know if I'm going to continue on that one (not synthy enough!) I also included some cool retro video game wallpapers to complete that 80s feel, I will upload those separately if anyone wants them.

Hi Rick
Thanks for posting your work in project form, I had no problems loading it into my G. You've certainly managed to get an authentic 80's vibe going, that truly big sound that only really comes from proper studios with the real analogue stuff. The songs are very true to the originals and could probably fool most karaoke singers, but since your potential audience will be more discerning then they would appreciate the care you've taken in recreating their favourites. In a suitable venue with vocals they would sound great, so I reckon your 80's tribute band idea is bang on course.
Thanks for sharing your work and enabling us to examine your modus operandi which will be particularly useful for newbies.

Very nice !

This would be a great idea to challenge content of Roland Clan.
Everyone would choose their favorite song and create on Fantom-G and send as PRJ here. :)

Thanks guys! Yes I'm really happy with how the sound has come together, I'm a bit of an obsessive-compulsive, details kinda guy so yeah I've tried to get the beats and sounds as exact as possible.

I think one thing that's helping to get that big, 80's kind of sound is using lots of Plate reverb, I find the fancier Hall reverbs to sound too perfect, the Plate gives it a nice washy retro sound.

Also I've found that retuning individual drums makes a huge difference... for instance I pitched the snare drums up a few semi-tones to better match the originals and it really makes the snares work better. Same with things like claves and cymbals, tuning them to the song really helps match the original sound. And on a similar note I'm finally finding a use for that Synth Drum patch (the pitched 80's tom sound), you can nail down the exact pitch of the toms used in the song and then just play the notes instead of tuning actual tom samples.

I'm on to the Eurythmics now... "Analog Feel" to the max baby!

Rick,

Excellent job. I downloaded the project last night. I'm going to play around with it tonight and will try to add the horn/trumpet sound that is played in the middle on the song.

Lol, I figured that you left that out for a reason. You really did a great job and I look forward to more 80's covers. Maybe this will give me inspiration to do the same thing. I'm still trying to figure out using all the features of the FG.

Hi rbarkhouse

Are you going to carry on with this project and upload an updated version.
I was most impressed with what you've done so far.

Cheers Simon

Hey thanks Simon!

Yes I'm still continuing with the project, just got delayed a bit because of a flood in my basement / recording studio :P Luckily nothing damaged though!

I've started work on "Don't You Want Me" by the Human League, I'll upload a new PRJ after I'm done that one, probably in a week or so!
