USB connection lost

My computer occasionally gives me a message that "USB malfunctioned and is not recognized". Then Fantom and V-Synth not getting any MIDI messages, while still listed available for the midi port assignment. I have to restart computer to get it back. I believe it happens with Fantom USB and affects other USB ports. Last time Motif stoped working as well, today Motif was working after it happened, but Fantom and V-Synth were not. Any thoughts on how to fix it? Thanks.

If it was only the Fantom-G, I would say check the USB cable, but since it happens with other gear as well, most probably it's more than that. I'd suggest that you schedule a formatting to your computer, just in case.

I used to get that error when ever I connected a USB drive or my pda phone.. etc... turned out it was faulty driver of my computer keyboard...

What else do you have connected via USB?

Eliminate all devices that you don't need and uninstall their drivers... Then uninstall Fantom-G USB driver... restart the computer and reinstall Fantom-G driver..

Also make sure you are not reaching USB device limit in Windows....

I'd say check the USB cable first, too. If you have a USB hub, check the cable between your computer and the hub. There are a lot of really bad USB cables out there that work well for the occasional printing task, but for 100% problem free audio streaming for hours and hours, they will not perform.

Second thing is to find out what shakil said above..

Last thing is to check what USB chipset you have and if it is possible it is broken somehow, but this really is last resort and not very likely...

Also what is "My Computer"? Mac or PC, version of OSX/Win/Linux? that also helps when troubleshooting... :)

Thanks for your replies. I know what you mean by saying that it can be anything. First of all I am thinking not as much USB cable, as USB port on Fantom. It is very unstable- I never seen worse port. The jack in it moving up and down and toward the sides. The port itself moving and the cable jack moving itself. This is not new thing- I did not like that port from day one, but usually if I don't touch it during operation- it does not interfere with anything. I am not happy that it happens when no one touches it- it just hanging in there. I am guessing- it is Fantom, not V-Synth GT, however- I do not remember having this problem before I got V-Synth. It feels as one of them loosing connection and that masses up Sonar, and then other USB become unresponsive. As I say- the other day all 3- Fantom, Motif and V-Synth got unresponsive, while last night only Fantom and V-Synth, Motif was working. When I restarted computer- V-Synth was back to normal, but Fantom was shown as "missed devise". So I believe it IS Fantom.

I have about 6-7 USB devices connected. Sorry- did not get a chance to read article about USB limit- will do after I post this. I can not tell about cable because- well- occasionally it does work. It works most of time, till it crashes, and when it crashes- Sonar gets unstable, and then when I restart computer- some time it still not recognized.

The USB I have connected:
1) Monitor (work as hub to connect numeric pad to use with Sonar- no drivers was installed for those 2- the pad connected to monitor)
2)Fantom
3)Motif
4)Unitor 8 (USB MIDI interface- been there for years- never any problems)
5)Ultra8 (Audio interface- it is new I do not use it, bought it for gigs/playing out, installed, but don't normally use- It was not connected when crashes happened- driver still installed. I could uninstall it, but I should not be forced to do so unless I have to- it should just work with it on board)
7)V-Synth GT
8) KVM switch (switch that connects multiple computers to 1 monitor and keyboard/mouse. It was working fine- the lost of USB is new thing).

The only 2 things I can think of that changed are V-Synth GT USB and M-Audio Ultra (that was not connected), and numeric pad connected trough monitor.

Ok- I did read the article. It is very interesting, I saved it, BUT- all my USB are recognizable- something just loosing connection and it affects Sonar and other USB devices- that's the problem.

This is Windows XP SP2. I remember checking updating drivers and it said- the USB drivers up to date. I will do it again if it crashes, but there must be something else. Some one suggested- Manufacturer ID, as it is 2 Roland USB products. I do not believe so- it does work together. Again- it's the Fantom that not getting recognized most of time. Any thoughts? Thanks.

A surface mount connector will move up and down and left to right and up and down and *snap*.. it's broken.. So don't try your luck too much. :)

You say you are using 6-7 USB devices. Are you using a USB Hub or do you just have a lot of USB ports on your machine?

6-7 USB devices with Windows is like 6-7 people on a scooter... very unstable.

Well- the moving USB is hard to protect, especially when you have 5 years old who is always standing right by it. But it was moving when I bought it. Is yours is not moving?

I have 6 ports on a back of computer- all taken. 2 on front holding Logic key. The computer was top line $4k with SCASI drives and Pantium 3.6 processor- 2004 built. Single processor.

By the way- I had lazer Logitech mouth at some time and I had to get rid of it because it would not work with audio devices. I do still have Logitech optical, but that thing wors for years.

How many USB devices do you have on your mac Artemiy?

I have 2x7 port HUBs connected to my Macbook. Works like a charm with all ports filled.

I have these connected:
- Logitec Mouse
- Fantom Gg
- Boss GT-10
- Waldorf Blofeld
- Korg PadKontrol
- Zoom H2
- Printer
- Backup HD
- Time Machine HD
- USB Stick 1Gb
- USB Stick 2Gb
- USB Stick 8Gb
- USB Card Reader
- MP3 player

I had problems, but they all related to poor quality USB cables.
I replaced all my USB cables with Lindy cables from thomann:

Oh, Jesse, I don't have that much attached, as I use WiFi for some things (with AirPort which can make a hard drive or printer work via WiFi). I have a backup drive hooked via FireWire, then in the USB I have the Apple keyboard, iPod cable and my Fantom-G, and I plug my mouse and USB drive into Apple keyboard. I plan to get a wireless mouse, though.

jesse: Do you have all this stuff attached to your DAW Mac? I have very little stuff attached to my DAW PC laptop via USB, purely the Fantom-G, a Logitech mouse and the backup hard drive. My audio interface and the main hard drive are connected via Firewire, and in different Firewire adapters (the hard drive in the integrated adapter, the audio interface through an ExpressCard34 Firewire adapter). I think that the USB bus shouldn't be very crowded, especially if you drive your main audio interface via USB.

cyclops asked:
>Do you have all this stuff attached to your DAW Mac?

Yes!

I know the USB specs and I know I shouldn't crowd the ports. Thing is, most of these are completely idle while I make music and I have divided the hubs so that they are on different ports by usage, so not even my mouse is colliding with the Fantom G while audio is streaming.

Ex. the Korg PadKontrol is in the same hub/port with the mouse, but I know I don't use the mouse while I play the Korg PadKontrol. etc. Most of the devices are turned off when they are not used, like the backup harddrives and printer, zoom, gt-10, blofeld, mp3 player. They are just connected, they are not in use.

In all, I pretty much use all the devices one-by-one, not at the same time. So I must say I don't have any dropouts or jitter, even if it looks that crowded.

Here's my original plan for my home studio from about a year ago. Some things have changed thou, but basically, the idea is I have everything connected at all times in my studio, including guitars bass and miced amp and vocal mic.. everything. All audio passes the fantom G, so the blue button for resampling is working for everything:

I will move into a new house in a few months, and building a new studio in the basement there, so I think I will expand some. I think that will include getting a FW interface, like a audiofire12/Motu so I can permanently connect all the DIY analog stuff I'm building without a mixer.

Jesse, can't see a USB DOES BEERS FRIDGE there, you told me this was the first element of your studio you purchased.

Re: USB connection lost

Hehe, the new studio will have a bar! Seriously, I was looking for a mini fridge about a year ago, but then people told me they are quite noisy. I'm allergic to noise pollution, specially in my studio.
