MV 8800 vs MPC 5000

MV 8800 vs MPC 5000

19 Nov 2008, 11:37
Ok so I bought the MV 8800, got a great price of $1799 for a new one. I have been using it for a few days and it has some great features. However; the processing time for importing, project start-up, etc...is extremely slow. Secondly, I wanted to purchase the additional output board for assigning tracks out but Roland no longer makes them. In fact the 8800 is not even advertised on the Roland website unless you search for it. This tells me that a newer model maybe coming out. If so, how does this affect the current users? I purchased my unit from Sam Ash Music so I have 45 days to decide if I keep it or go for the MPC. Right now it's 50/50.

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated? Mike A. where are you on this?

First, it starts up a lot faster than a PC.

Second: what do actualy want to acheive?
What do kind of music do you want to make?
What workflow do you want to follow and what do you expect/require an MV or MPC to do for you?

Ok, so I want the MV or MPC to help me with sampling. I want to radically mash and mix the samples via the pads. Then I want to assign the different pad sounds to individual tracks and play them back into Logic or Ableton for recording. I am new to this so I may not be saying this right.

I am also very concerned that the 8800 might becoming obsolete since I can purchase the expansion board for adding the individual track outs.

Maybe I am over concerned and over thinking. I tried to accomplish the same tasks via Ableton but i need hardware.

Thanks.

I can still see the MV 8800 on the Roland's homepage and the MV 8800 isn't that old for the next generation.

But who knows, maybe the MV 8800 is successful and is already out of stock ;)

With the MV 8800 you can't do anything wrong then I read a lot of bad reviews for the MPC 5000.

The MV 8800 offers a lot more in my eyes than the MPC with the same price! The MPC hasn't got the CD-ROM drive included.

Roland did a lot of catch up and also an innovation process to get to the MV 8800. I am planing to buy a MV 8800 then it convinced me with its workflow (the VGA-Out is a real pleasure, CD-ROM drive already installed). I think the MV 8800 is a mature product, now!

A pity is, that the MV 8800 hasn't got the same software design like the Fantom G. This would help me learning the MV 8800 to use easier.

I hope Roland is working on this ;)

So, go for the MV 8800 then at the moment it kicks the MPC5000 away.

Peace
No questions asked the MV 8800 is far from obsolete.

Roland really took the crown away from AKAI with this one. Hell it reads several MPC sound and program files.

The built in VGA card makes sequencing and editing a breeze.

As far as roland coming out with a new version of the MV, I don't see it happening for a while. They haven't even updated the operating system for the 8800 yet. That is something they did several times with the 8000 before the 8800 was even mentioned.

It's still very much a new product at 2 years old.

It does what the MPC can't and has a smoother work flow than software.

MV easier to use than fantom

You said you wish the MV operated more like the fantom. I strongly disagree with that. I think that once you've learned how to use the MV you'll feel the same way.

They are very different...

i THINK YOU NEED A MUCH LESSER MACHINE IN ORDER TO JUST SAMPLE, MANGLE SAMPLES AND play with their waveform and sequences, no need to use such big-time machines which are, in many ways, overkill.
For example, Roland makes the SP-555 groovesampler: it does an enormous amount of things regarding sampling, sequencing, editing, pad settings, effecting, and so on; and, regardless of its appearance, it's a very progessional machine that will save you a thousand dollars. Plus, its fun factor when using it is stellar compared to ANY MPC or also the MV. Or, you could find an used SP-808EX which is long discontinued but it matches any MPC by far.
Give them a test.
