SRX-99 Review

SRX-99 Review

15 Sep 2004, 21:11
I just received the SRX-99 that I bought on E-Bay.
Only 6 days from H-K to Canada (Montreal)
No surprise here.
At first I was not able to access the new patch bank.
So I upgraded from 1.05 to the latest OS 1.08.
Problem solved.

BUT HERE'S THE CATCH : the Wave and Patches mark with the # are playable over the entire range BUT NOT THE OTHER ONES. The waves no. 16 trough 81 are only playable from E3 to G4 notes, roughly one octave. And so are the patches associate with these waves, patches 40 trought 64.
After the OS upg I was still under the impression something was wrong with my setup until I examined the patches using a mix of the exp unmarked waves and internal ones. Keys limits where set to the the internal wave to match the limits of the exp waves.
SO BE FULLY AWARED THAT THIS IS A HEAVILY CASTRATED BOARD.
To see the patches and wave list go here :
http://www.roland.co.jp/lib/download/Tone_list.html

I almost broke the board on the wall and felt cheated, the seller should have warned me.
Since this board was a freebee in Japan it's hard to put Roland at fault here.

Ok So about the fully playable waves :

1 #V VOX :voxy waves with anoying pitch shifting attack, so-so
2 #Jet Hit :nice effect, could be used as a flange emulation
3 #Reso Sweep : reminded me my D-10, nice reso tone
not the POP wave I was expecting
4 #Synth Gtr : remind me of my JV-80, synth guitar
5 #Saw Stack L
6 #Saw Stack R : Killer pad/analog strg wave, superb
7 #Bell Loop : so-so
8 #GlassyLoopL : nice effect, reminded me of the M1 magic organ
9 #GlassyLoopR
10 #Dist Saw : could be usefull as a layer
11 #Lead Wave : so-so
12#PWM : Very good analog wave
13#Big Stack : good
14 #Morph Shape : a nice synth vox wave, a welcome addition
15#MasterChord : so-so stack

The patches using these waves are good.

It should be noted that he card was specifically designed for the Fantom-X synths and some of the patches included with the card may be utilizing the Internal B bank of waveforms. This will certainly cause patches not to sound correctly on the Fantom-S. I don't have the card though, so I can't say for sure if that has anything to do with the limited patches you found.

''the patches included with the card may be utilizing the Internal B bank of waveforms.''
Yes it's in my Fantom-S (OS 1.08)
But this doesn't explain the E3-G4 limit on the internal wave.
The limit applied to the internal waves is to clearly match the limits of the SRX-99 waves.
I also tried all the waves with my own programed patches, with the same result. The first 15 waves are fully usable and don't come from the SRX library, but the SRX waves only work within the one octave limit.

SO you can try the SRX waves on one octave, to really tease the customer in us. BUT you don't own them fully.
You get a full 15 waves selection as a bonnus.
As a freebe this is not bad, and make sense.
But not as a $105 board on E-BAY.

''mmmmhhh. i was looking to buy that board from ebay as well from dhlkid, Is that the same guy as you brought it from ???''

YES it is.

I had multiple e-mail with the seller yesterday.
He was responding fast and offer me a compensation, wich I accepted.(a new 128 megs Smartmedia free with no s/h charge, and these cards are expensive around here)
He felt sorry and he didn't knew about the exact details of the card, if you look at his auctions there is a lot of synth stuff from various co.
So I'm not happy about the situation but I don't feel ripoff either.

So I'll end up with a handfull of nice new waves, and the 128 megs card that I needed.

Hey, I think you actually made a good deal with that SM card.
If you're still unhappy, you may always resell it on eBay yourself, I'm pretty sure you'll find a buyer.

At last, I'm part of the gang !
No longer part of the gang...

Just to let you know the end of the story:
''dhlkid'' kept his word and I got a free brand new 128 megs Smartmedia and he pull off his SRX-99 cards from E-Bay.

Yeah dhlkid is alright, I bought my SRX-07 from him.

Think of it this way, yes it's severely castrated compared to a normal SRX, but at least you paid a lot less than a regular SRX (I hope...)

Now... since the SRX-99 was a free giveaway, what about somebody sampling all the waves and putting them up on Fantomized? ;)

SRX-98 and 99

14 Jan 2009, 12:42
In case the mystery hasn't been cleared up by now, the SRX 98 and 99 boards were "giveaways" that intentionally only had samples of samples (if you'll pardon the pun). Never been for sale anywhere, they were included with the Fantom in its earlier days...
