Using software based instruments with the S88

Using software based instruments with the S88

Please excuse my lack of knowledge. What do I need to purchase to use all of the software based keyboard modules, and be able to play them on my S88.

I am from the 60's-70's era where I used the actual instruments. But I need to get caught up with technology and besides, I can't afford to buy all of the analog based instruments from that era.

Thanks for any information you can provide me. Maybe some suggestions on Brand, Model etc.

All you need is get the Edirol UM-1EX or similar USB-MIDI interface which will allow you to connect your S88 to the computer and use it as a controller keyboard for the software synthesizers. Depending on your computer type (Mac or PC), you will also need a host application to compose music with, like Logic, Cubase or Sonar.

I will not need the host software for live performances though. Just for recording purposes.

Is this correct?

I do have Sonar.

Without the host software, it will be very hard to work with softsynths even in live situations. Even if you load them all as standalone applications, how do you set up the channels on each one, and maybe save this setup? You can't save it. In the host, you can assign synths to different channels to be controlled from your S88, and save this setup (even without the actual sequence).
