USB and my new MV8800

Well, it seems to be broken.

I've tried linking my MV8800 via USB to three seperate PCs. A small Toshiba notebook, a large Toshiba Laptop and an old no-name desktop unit that used to be my Cubase workstation.
In all cases, one of three things happens at random:
1. Nothing - no recognition at the PC end that anything is connected.
2. PC reports that the USB device is 'not recognised' or 'has malfunctioned'
3. PC freezes, until I pull the plug on the MV.

On one occasion, I got a connection to the Notebook and started transfering the MV patches that I have downloaded from the RolandUS website. After about 10 minutes the MV froze. The PC reported a lost connection.

Anyone else had problems like this?

Thanks.

My MV8800 manual has been sat next to the MV8800, open at those pages, since Friday last week.

Have you followed each link of the manual

PS- I am no user of this Groovemachine. I've only looked up the manual from the website, in my own time to try and help you. Sorry if i have been very limited !

Yes! Over and over again!

Writing manuals for electronic equipment is part of my job, so I believe in reading manuals.

Well, if it's not a bad cable then I don't know either... Cuz here the process is easy..

1. connect both machines..
2. hit the **DISK/USB** button
3. Hit [F3] **USB**
4. Hit [F5] **Connect**
5. **DOO -DING** ,, you should be connected..

I wish....

Tried four cables now.

Roland support tld me to disable iTunes, Windows Media Player and any anti virus software. I replied to tell them I had done that and I have not heard frm them since. I guess I have a dodgy unit.

Yes, i know that it can get frustrating reading the manual over and over and yet the pieces don't fall together. Roland manuals are more chain listed. It would be better if they were more detailed with diagnostic trouble shooting.

By reading your posts on this thread, it seems to me that you have gone to a great degree of trying to figure it out. I think your right, quite possible that the unit consists of a bug or as you've mentioned, dodgy. I wish i was able to provide the answer for you. I like to give a helping hand when i can, but unfortunately it does'nt happen that way at times.

I do hope you find the solution soon, GOODLUCK!

Are you running Vista? If so the USB driver set is usually available for newer laptops. I just went through the same thing with a Gateway laptop running Vista. The system update from Gateway fixed it and the MV is now recognized.

Thanks for the tip but no, I'm running XP SP3.

I took the MV and my notebook to the store on Friday. Notebook communicated perfectly with the store's display MV. SO mine went back to Roland and they say they will have a new one for me on Tuesday.

SIX DAYS after I returned my MV nothing had been done.

I got real cross and threatened to demand a refund. Luckily, the local Roland Rep took notice and got me a replacement MV from another store. TEN days after I returned the faulty MV it is still sitting in the store, waiting for Roland to do something about it.

I have a new MV and I am very pleased with it. But I'm a bit worried about the standard of customer service and Roland's cast iron three year garanty. What happens if it develops a fault? Judging by this incident - nothing.

Hey Nik

Sorry to hear about your situation BUT usually if the unit is still sitting at the store , its because the store has not requested an RA# from Roland.

Ive seen this many times. Once an RA has been requested they have to get the call tags and ship it out. Unfortunately alot of sales guys will not bother as they tend to focus on other things and will let the unit sit there.

If its a superstore like Guitar Center , it can really take some time because the store ( a sales person ) has to contact GC Corp , then GC Corp has to contact Roland for an RA , once that is done , the unit i believe has to get shipped back to GC's warehouse THEN to Roland.

So i highly doubt its a question of Roland's customer service.

Glad to hear you got a replacement though.

This is a store in the UK.
They have a guy employed by Roland working in the store to help them sell Roland stuff. He says Roland UK won't would not authorise the return because the unit had been in the back room of the store boxed, new) for more than four months. They would not authorise a replacement for the same reason.

Eventually he got one sent from another store in the chain, so I'm happy. Just seems like neither the store nor Roland were interested in making things right for the customer.
