Hooking up a synth.. Little Phatty or MEK

Hooking up a synth.. Little Phatty or MEK

Hi All

I'm very tempted to dive in and buy a moog little phatty or dave smith mono evolver keyboard synth as I want to f* about with monstrous basslines and want the tactile approach of an actual keyboard, but an analogue one.

Firsty - anyone have any experience of these two synths and recommend a way to go..

Secondly - can anyone recommend the best way to hook up the two succesfully - would you have to sample the sounds you wanted from the synths into the memory of the 808 or would you have it send midi messages to the synth to avoid having to eat up sample time..

Thanks in advance for any help!
Geoff

I'd suggest you go with the Moog. The thing is, while the Evolvers are great on paper (really lots of things to play with), they do not sound that good - as to my taste, of course - somewhat lifeless. The Moog, is well, a true Moog - sounds brilliant, fresh, warm and fat. It may have less features, but at the end will give you more great sounds as you will simply enjoy it every second. I wouldn't even hesitate.

As for how to hook things up, you can do both ways. You'd need to sample if you want to have multiple sounds from these synths (they are mono-timbral), but you'd use one MIDI part to be able to tweak things in realtime if you need it (during a live performance, for example).

Hi GOSH,

if you just want to sample e.g. the basslines you can also buy a used analog synth like mini moog or moog prodigy. That will save you some money but you will loose the ability to adress them with midi.

Ciao, Dirk.

thanks for the advice guys..

Yeah I've been advised by more uber-analogue flat mate that it should be moog all the way!

I think mini-moogs and prodigys still go for more than the little phatty despite the lack of midi! The LP seems like a bargain and reviews have been all good!

Does anyone have any good videos or audio clips perchance of hooking up synths to 808's??

And i'm assuming that the midi the 808 chucks out will only be the sequencing information. ie. I'll have to change presets/banks on the moog itself - I can't trigger these changes using the 808?!

cheers

ps - apologies - I'm not all that good at midi!

I bought e MEK and it was nothing but disappointment after disappointment...everything about it is pretty wrong...

Then I bought a Voyager, and firmly kicked myself for not doing it earlier..

It's THAT sound, and it's become my go to synth for just about everything, it's capable of so much it's untrue and the more you get to know it the more secrets it reveals..

Get the Little Phatty, there really is no competition..

I'd actually like to do a very similar thing with my Voyager..I haven't got an 808 yet but it's really sounding like an interesting buy..

Would it possible to assign sequences and samples to the pads in RPS mode and fire off sequences to my Voyager with some pads while firing off samples from the 808 with other pads?

NO

RPS is hardwired to the internal sound engine, which means its impossible to drive any ext gear with RPS
